Actor Sean Penn said in a Friday preview of an interview with CBS' "60 Minutes" that his article based on a secret interview with then-fugitive cartel leader "El Chapo" "has failed" to achieve his goal of sparking conversation about the War on Drugs.
Penn met the notorious Sinaloa Cartel leader, whose real name is Joaquin Guzman, back in October with the help of Mexican actress Kate del Castillo. His story for Rolling Stone went live on Saturday, one day after Mexican authorities announced the fugitive's capture. Journalists immediately criticized the piece.
"I have a regret that the entire discussion about this article ignores its purpose, which was to try to contribute to this discussion about the policy in the War on Drugs," Penn told host Charlie Rose.
He continued: "Let me be clear. My article has failed."
Penn also suggested the journalists who tore apart his article were "green-eyed monsters."
"When you get the story that every journalist in the world wanted, there's a lot of green-eyed monsters who gonna come give you a kiss," Penn said.
He also said he wanted to see the "license that says that (his critics are) journalists."
He’s a journalist?
He’s glorifying a man who has murdered thousands of people. So sad it didn’t turn out well for the ole pot head.
His entire point was to try and paint Chapo as a great an wunnerful guy who was jus missunnerstood.
May the cartel hit men find him and show him how great and wunnerful Chapo is..
I slogged through the first couple of pages of Penn’s article. He’s a lousy writer.
Hugo Hernandez,....the guy who the Sinaloa Cartel tortured, murdered, skinned his face, and sewed it to a soccer ball which, IIRC, was then tossed onto a playground would probably disagree with the wonderful businessman assessment.
Yes.
But don’t tell that to Sean Penn.
Let him find out firsthand.
My advice, don’t vacation in Puerta Vallarta
Hooray!Sean Elliott Ness Penn who lives in Malibu CA and helped capture a drug lord is an American hero. All these years pretending to be a dirt bag liberal and actually being an undercover DEA agent.
I only saw the two minute excerpt, not the 17 minute unedited version. But the questions I saw were very unflattering and accusatory.
Do you agree drugs destroy, do you agree many millions of people more are addicted to drugs because of you, why are you so prone to violence...
He’s giving a murderer a positive avenue for his message. the message we’re supposed to get is that if drugs were legal I wouldnt have to do all this stuff.
I’m sure you’re right, i didn’t read the article that came out
Who in their right mind would go anywhere near that guy... insane.
El Chapo?? ... or Sean peck$%head?? :)
El Chapo got arrested, Sean.
...problem?
