Why I Will Never Vote for Donald Trump
New York Times ^ | January 14, 2016 | Peter Wehner

Posted on 01/14/2016 5:40:21 AM PST by reaganaut1

...

Mr. Trump has no desire to acquaint himself with most issues, let alone master them. He has admitted that he doesn't prepare for debates or study briefing books; he believes such things get in the way of a good performance. No major presidential candidate has ever been quite as disdainful of knowledge, as indifferent to facts, as untroubled by his benightedness.

It is little surprise, then, that many of Mr. Trump's most celebrated pronouncements and promises - to quickly and "humanely" expel 11 million illegal immigrants, to force Mexico to pay for the wall he will build on our southern border, to defeat the Islamic State "very quickly" while as a bonus taking its oil, to bar Muslims from immigrating to the United States - are nativistic pipe dreams and public relations stunts.

Even more disqualifying is Mr. Trump's temperament. He is erratic, inconsistent and unprincipled. He possesses a streak of crudity and cruelty that manifested itself in how he physically mocked a Times journalist with a disability, ridiculed Senator John McCain for being a P.O.W., made a reference to "blood" intended to degrade a female journalist and compared one of his opponents to a child molester.

Mr. Trump's legendary narcissism would be comical were it not dangerous in someone seeking the nation's highest office - as he demonstrated when he showered praise on the brutal, anti-American president of Russia, Vladimir V. Putin, responding to Mr. Putin’s expression of admiration for Mr. Trump.

...

Mr. Trump's virulent combination of ignorance, emotional instability, demagogy, solipsism and vindictiveness would do more than result in a failed presidency; it could very well lead to national catastrophe. The prospect of Donald Trump as commander in chief should send a chill down the spine of every American.

I agree. A lot of people are going to vote for Trump because he’s all of those thing. For me, principles are more important than power. I will never vote for a disgusting conman.

I’ll be working for a Cruz win, as well as sending money.

Nonetheless, Trump would be a better President than our recent choices. There is a chance he could be great (as well as a chance that he would be a great disappointment.)

But it is worth a chance if he is the choice.

WOW. The NYT must really want Trump to win. What an endorsement.

Trump is over the target.

I don’t understand the need for the ‘I’m not going to vote for ______’ kind of comments. Seems childish to me and I doubt it will persuade others to take their toys and go home. It’s simple, vote, don’t vote, live with the consequences.

NOT your words [for sake of others reading] ...

‘I don’t want to make a nasty, arrogant blowhard like Trump the most powerful man in the world.’

What we need is someone willing to confront powerful world leaders. The USA has played ‘nice’ and fluffy and sweetness diplomatically ever since WWII. Where did that get us?

GW Bush tried the ‘New Tone’ with the democrats. Where did that get us?

Only a useful idiot would think that Trump’s aggressiveness is a ‘negative’.

I believe Cruz can, should and will win the GOP nomination, but if Trump won it I would vote for him.

Despite the fact that I believe he would grow the government (and debt) faster than Obama has, and he will find the Constitution as much an annoyance to be ignored as Obama does, he would close the border and fight Islamic terrorism.

Besides, there'd be the humor factor - he'd be like President Newbomb Turk, pranking on our uptight corrupt media and Democrats, while treating noxious foreign regimes with the disrespect and derision they deserve.

I find it interesting when people feel the need to say, “I’ll never vote for X” and then have to qualify themselves “...and I’m not part of the establishment....”

I will vote for Cruz or Trump in a heartbeat.

I will hold my nose and vote for Rubio, Huckabee, Fiorina, Santorum, Gilmore, Paul, or Carson.

I will not vote for Bush. He is no better than any of the others, and there is absolutely no reason to put a 3rd member of exactly the same family in the presidency in the last 25 years. That might be ok in the People’s Democratic Republic of North Korea, but it is out of line in the USA. (Besides, he’s a liberal.)

I absolutely will not vote for Christie. No other candidate has committed the unbelievably evil act of signing a law that forbids parents from getting counseling for their homosexual children. He was under ZERO pressure from anything that would force him to do that. He WANTED to do it. Tells me all I need to know. He is the MOST LIBERAL of all these people. The Obama hug also says so.

No vote? Then you will have abrogated your right to bitch about things as they are.

I don't, necessarily, agree with that, but yeah. This is too important to just "leave blank".

Said it before and I'll say it again: I want Cruz, but I will vote for Trump if he's there.

My favorite Trumpism is banning all Muslims from entering the United States “until we figure out what’s going on.”

What the bloody hell does that even mean???!!! While I support tight screening of EVERYONE coming into the country, especially from Muslim, Middle East countries, I want to know, specifically what his policy will be. I don’t want to hear, “I’ll put the best people on it.” It’s time to start being concrete.

You and I disagree about withholding my vote. I will vote for Trump should he be the nominee. I don’t think this country could survive 8 years of Hillary Clinton.

Trump hasn’t won the nomination yet..

when he does he will be invited to the White house and filled in on some secrets..

until then how would he know what is happening in the WH, the Pentagon, the State Dept, Homeland security..etc

Does the author know ???

plus Trump can keep things to himself unlike the narciss in my White house who has to blab our nations secrets to impress other idiots

Trump supporters think anyone who attacks him is “part of the establishment”. I’m not — I just don’t like him.
