After months of playing nice, Cruz hits Trump. Then hits him again. And again.

After months of responding to Donald Trump's attacks by deflecting them, joking about them or just plain ignoring them, Ted Cruz struck back late Tuesday with a stream of pointed criticism directed at the GOP front-runner.

At events in New Hampshire and in radio interviews, Cruz took direct aim at Trump on several fronts: tying the billionaire to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, questioning his ability to win a general election, casting doubt on his ability to serve as commander in chief and disputing his "New York values."

The swiftness and ferocity of the attacks is striking for Cruz, who said as recently as Monday that he didn't want to go to war with Trump. The two men are battling for the top spot in polls in Iowa, which host the first-in-the-nation caucuses Feb. 1. Cruz said Tuesday that Trump was clearly feeling the pressure.

Cruz took direct aim at Trump's competence. "Does a potential commander in chief know what the nuclear triad is, much less is he or she prepared and able to strengthen it and keep this country safe?" Cruz asked on "The Hugh Hewitt Show." In a Republican debate last month, Trump was asked about the nuclear triad and had trouble with the explanation.

And he jabbed Trump on the billionaire's cosmopolitan lifestyle. “I think he may shift in his new rallies to playing New York, New York, because Donald comes from New York and he embodies New York values,” Cruz told Carr.

Trump is clueless. Not ready for prime time. Except in some dopey reality show of course.

A great CiC would surround himself with experienced SMEs. As neither Trump nor Cruz have served, questioning another’s CiC qualifications or knowledge is without merit.

Cruz is hitting Trump hard because Trump has exposed Cruz’s Achilles heel...he’s not a natural born citizen & is not eligible to be President. This is Cruz’s fault, he should have never run.

After months of responding to Donald Trump's attacks by deflecting them, joking about them or just plain ignoring them,

BS. Cruz started this war of words weeks ago with his sneaky little comments that he: "doesn't think Donald will be the nominee." Then the leaks, intentional or not, from his private meeting with some of his big donors. All before Trump said anything disparaging about Cruz.

That's a question Trump needs to start asking: Who are Cruz's big donors and what do they want?

Cruz: I am mad as he// and I am not going to take it anymore.
Cruz is doing some schooling.
Just read Phil Robertson endorsed him.

Heard the same arguments in '03 during the governors race here in CA.

As a consequence we ended up with the popular guy, this one more concerned with his own popularity than what was right for the state. Turned out he was no better than the democrat alternative.

If we'd pulled together and put the "unelectable" guy in office the state would most likely not be where it is today. I'll never compromise again.

Vote for whomever you like, but do because of where they stand on the issues only.

I agree with you. I think either of them alone can bury Jeb; but it will take both of them together to bury Rubio.

To date, Cruz and Trump are the only ones running (and polling over 1%) that I’m willing to vote for. That being said, the only effective criticism of Trump would come from his right, and Cruz is the only candidate with the credibility to pull that off. Trump’s Teflon is thin on the right side.

"because Donald comes from New York and he embodies New York values" Cruz told Carr."

Real smooth line there, Ted. Glad to know that there are swaths of the nation you really are willing to say suck while trying to run to be president of it.

Whatever you do, avoid mentioning 9-11 at any point in the future.

It’s crap like this post that clears the way for Bush/Rubio. The GOPe is counting on it.

You and I have been here a long time. I respect your opinion on the matter.

My opinion is the exact opposite, name fore name, position for position.

I think what we have always needed is for Cruz and Trump to eliminate everyone else. Then, the two of them can have a proper race.

Either way, the GOPe / Uniparty loses. Recalling Jim Thompson approximately:

“We Win! They Lose! Go, Go Trump and Cruz!”

Trump has taken every conservative out of this race. He isn’t gonna stop now. Cruz is gonna be the last to fall. Then we’ll be stuck with only RINOs to nominate. What a brilliant maneuver by Clinton INC to talk their pal into running.

From the article: “After months of responding to Donald Trump’s attacks by deflecting them, ... Ted Cruz struck back late Tuesday”

“i really wish these two could hold on attacking each other until the establishment is dead and buried. they are opening the door for rubio, christie.”

I agree, but I guess Cruz tired of the routine.

After taking direct fire from the bloviator for over a month. Ted Cruz has finally started returning fire. And it’s well aimed, effective and withering. Bring on the popcorn.
