Natural Born Citizenship: An archaic presidential qualification
American Thinker ^ | 01/12/2016 | Jonathan F. Keller

I rarely agree with liberal Washington Post columnist Ruth Marcus, but she’s recently penned two pieces that actually make sense.  Though Marcus is a strong supporter of Hillary Clinton, she acknowledged a couple weeks ago that Donald Trump’s threat to go after the Democrat frontrunner for enabling her sexually predatory husband was perfectly legitimate.  Now, as Ted Cruz is under attack from Trump (and some on the left) for being born in Canada, she’s sensibly calling for the end of the presidential natural-born citizen test.

I heard a lot about this test from a young age.  My father was born in Czechoslovakia and grew up in Germany, moving to the U.S. when he was ten.  He arrived in the magical “linguistic window” so that he spoke American English like a native and still retained his native fluency in German.  He served honorably as an American naval officer in World War II and after that held several federal government jobs that required a high security clearance.  Yet, as he rarely tired of telling me, he could never become president.

Marcus gives a brief historical rundown of the particulars of how this rule came to be, focusing on fears in the early republic that unscrupulous foreigners would run for office and try to undo the radical American experiment in freedom and democracy.  That, she claims, as have many others, is no longer really relevant in a strong and stable nation of immigrants.  It leads to odd anomalies as to who can or can’t become president, based on nothing but the accident of birth.

It is also worth noting, if for no other reason than historical interest, that this rule might be dubbed the creole addition to the Constitution.

We should not give up anything that shreds our Constitution and the intent of our Founding Fathers.

We've already let a non natural citizen be President, and he's turned out as horrible as people expected him to be.

At this point it is silly to turn our backs on a man that knows how to right the country just because he doesn't conform to the rule we've already broken.

The worst constitutional crises isn't the qualification for President. It's Liberal Judges.

Barack Obama appointed lots of them, (and they gave us "gay" freakin "Marriage") and Donald Trump will inadvertently keep appointing more of these loons to Federal office.

The only candidate who will not do this is Ted Cruz. I fully believe he will refuse to appoint judges that are liberal.

So since we are measuring crises, I would rather solve the bigger crises, and not worry so much about the lesser crises of "Oh my God! We have to follow the rules! "

Now, as Ted Cruz is under attack from Trump...

Oh, he is not.

Trump is cleaning up the mess before it becomes a problem.

People don't understand what The Media is going to do with the Cruz citizenship thing, because of the way 0Muslim's citizenship "problems" were so easily defused by The Media.

If Ted Cruz had had EXACTLY the same situation as the Kenyan, The Media would have had him evicted from the White House but pronto - first year, at the latest.

Now, they have a situation where Cruz was INDEED born outside the United States, and was apparently a Canadian citizen, to boot.

They're not going to let it go until they're beaten bloody with a legal ruling in the form of a nail-studded baseball bat.

Assuming for a moment this is a valid issue and not just some partisan ploy - Personally, I'm tired of constantly slamming the barn door after the marxist horse has bolted.

We're always letting the other side get away with mass murder, then engage in garment rending & self flagellation at the merest nuance in the interpretation of the law. The other side must get the biggest kick out of us.

Ted Cruz’s eligibility and Donald Trump’s concerns aside, what I’d really like to know are the thoughts of FReepers regarding the NECESSITY of this particular clause today.

Is it still needed? or should it be amended?

The current administration is all the proof I need to conclude we need to follow, to the letter, our Constitution. Only natural born citizens, born on soil to two citizen parents, may serve as POTUS.

Cruz can get in..completely forgetting what a nightmare and quigmire has been the reign of the Muslim Dictator and his Iranian puppetmaster

The notion that Ted Cruz would be as horrible as Obama is ridiculous, and completely unworthy of someone whom I regard as a thinking person.

It would have been difficult to get someone as bad as Obama. I think the average Frenchman off the streets of Paris would have protected the interests of the United States better than that affirmative action buffoon.

I believe Ted Cruz would put the interests of the US ahead of either Canada or Cuba. It is a silly notion that he would demonstrate any kind of bias in favor of either nation.

RE: Only natural born citizens, born on soil to two citizen parents, may serve as POTUS.

Is that the original understanding of the framers when they put the clause in?

If so, why was John McCain the nominee?

You completely missed the point. COMPLETELY.

Read it again and see if you can figure out why lowering the bar for one person may not be a good thing.

Therefore we find no such language in the Constitution and our belief that the natural born citizen clause defends us against traitors is but a chimera.

It would have defended us against trash like Obama but for the tampering to the meaning which has been perpetrated since the 18th century.

Under the original meaning, Obama would be a Kenyan, not an American.

So? Trump was a citizen of Liberal Loonyville before he immigrated. What’s your problem? He’s duly filed his papers as a Republican. Do you need to see them?

Why are so many pundits AND even the DNC Chair coming out in favor of Cruz and many claiming it is settled law?

You ask a good question. One should get very suspicious when the Left suddenly gets all solicitous. My methodology is to identify the candidate that causes the Left maximum apoplexy. I figure that’s the right candidate for me.

Same way they want to do away with the Electoral College.

My Dad was born a US Citizen, of 2 Naturalized Citizens, Italian decent, spoke only a few words of the language. As his dad enforced the You are an AMERICAN now rule act it, on his 8 children. Fought under Gen Mac in the Pacific in WW2, 5 major battles including Corregidor, he was Airborne, and jumped with our Flag to put up when Gen Mac retook the Rock. He was a SGT, and a PFC went with him under sniper fire and put the Flag up on a telegraph pole, brought it down, to be given to Gen Mac and put up a second one, until the official flag raising 2 weeks later. Earned a Bronze Star for it. That does not mean he was qualified to run as President, 8th grade education. Came home and worked at Youngstown Sheet and Tube Steel Mill as a boiler maker until falling off a scaffold damaged his neck/back.

It is even more perplexing because we know so many Elite hate Ted Cruz.

Is it simply a matter of Dems think Hillary can bet Ted but not Trump?

I think it is more than that.

Because electing a dual citizen, British subject through his father, and American citizen through his mother, with uncertain birth location (Kenya? Canada? Hawaii?) and formative year upbringing in madrasas in Indonesia, who apparently went to school here as a foreign student has worked out so well for America, hasn’t it???

How can anyone who’s lived through seven nightmarish Obama years ask that question? He is the exact kind of citizen the Founders wanted to prevent worming their way into the WH, and destroying the country from within.

How does that follow from the article?

Remove all requirements for pResident and allow anyone to run and we will have lots of rich Saudis running for president. Islam has sworn to destroy the great satin which is us (US). Imagine Iran, Syria, and who knows who running for leadership of the us. We can see what a Sunni muslim has done to this country already.

Balderdash. It's a new day.....these sap-happy liberals better start living in this century.

If we accept anything less than the constitution's original intent, it could allow the offspring of an American who joined ISIS and birthed a child w/ say, a Syrian, to claim eligibility for the office.

==========================================

BACKSTORY Cruz was born in Canada to a Canadian father and a Delaware-born American mother......thus making Cruz a dual Canadian-American citizen. Texans elected him to the US Senate not knowing he was a dual Canadian citizen.

It was not until a 2013 Dallas Morning News article that Cruz acknowledged his Canadian citizenry publicly. In 2014, the senator publicly renounced his Canadian citizenship altogether.

Cruz consistently depicted himself as "latino" Yet his family bgrnd indicates only his father is Spanish; his mother is of two nationalities, Italian and Irish from each of her parents.

Cruz ran in Texas as a latino (which has a wealth of latino votes). Cruz even convinced the Senate biographer that he was the first latino elected to the Senate (besides Rubio).

As the immigration issue grew negative in the world of politics, being known as a latino has lost its luster.

===============================================

WIKI The 1803 edition of William Blackstone's Commentaries on the Laws of England, perhaps the leading authority for the delegates to the Constitutional Convention for the terms used in the Constitution, noted that the natural born citizen clause is "a means of security against foreign influence" and that "[t]he admission of foreigners into our councils, consequently, cannot be too much guarded against."

=============================================

NOTE At the time, King George, and lordly England, were the colonists' boogeymen. It was feared the wealthy Brits could surreptitiously buy their way into our new country's councils and wreak havoc.

====================================================

OLD THINGS SEEM SUDDENLY NEW AGAIN Cruz's wife is a Goldman Sachs exec.

Mrs Cruz served on the North American Union task force, and supported their report called---'Building a North American Community."

The North/South border effort was sponsored by the Council on Foreign Relations in association with the Canadian Council of Chief Executives and the Consejo Mexicano de Asuntos Internacionales.

Translated into English, that means forget US sovereignty....just eradicate US borders.

Canada is under the jurisdiction of England.
