Is it ever considered that “natural born” was / is a contrast to “naturalized”?
That is, a person who must go through the naturalization process can not be natural born.

That last category clearly includes Cruz, making him a "citizen of the United States at birth." The only question, then, is whether a citizen at birth is also a natural born citizen. "My conclusion would be that if you are a citizen as a consequence of your birth, that's a natural born citizen," Olson told me in 2012. "It is not our view that natural born citizenship requires the citizenship of both parents."
Since nothing further was required for Ted to acquire citizenship, his classification has been deemed to be natural born.

I was referring to the statute, and particularly to the part that covers birth abroad to a couple with one citizen parent, and one alien parent. The statute says what it says, and Cruz's birth satisfies the conditions in the statute.

Yes, there is that too, as well as the law in operation at that vintage. If Cruz's eligibility is evaluated under that standard, he is not a citizen at all. His citizenship depends on the statute.
Just to put my point of view in the open, I don't think Cruz is NBC, SCOTUS rhetoric supports my point of view (citizen by operation of statute is "naturalized" even if there is no naturalization proceeding), and that the question of Cruz's eligibility will be decided by the political process, not a court/legal process. If enough people believe Cruz is NBC, then he is, for practical/operative purposes.
