For Republicans, Mounting Fears of Lasting Split
The New York Times ^ | January 9th, 2016 | By PATRICK HEALY and JONATHAN MARTIN

The Republican Party is facing a historic split over its fundamental principles and identity, as its once powerful establishment grapples with an eruption of class tensions, ethnic resentments and mistrust among working-class conservatives who are demanding a presidential nominee who represents their interests.

At family dinners and New Year’s parties, in conference calls and at private lunches, longtime Republicans are expressing a growing fear that the coming election could be shattering for the party, or reshape it in ways that leave it unrecognizable.

While warring party factions usually reconcile after brutal nomination fights, this race feels different, according to interviews with more than 50 Republican leaders, activists, donors and voters, from both elite circles and the grass roots.

Never have so many voters been attracted to Republican candidates like Donald J. Trump and Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, who are challenging core party beliefs on the economy and national security and new goals like winning over Hispanics through immigration reform. Rank-and-file conservatives, after decades of deferring to party elites, are trying to stage what is effectively a people’s coup by selecting a standard-bearer who is not the preferred candidate of wealthy donors and elected officials.

The party is in realignment and even Conservative Orthodoxy is being redefined.

Of course that's painful for the losers because it also causes uncertainty and pain in the Aristocracy and Media elite.

On just one issue alone, the realignment took place decades ago.

Not since Ronald Reagan has anyone stood up for the working man as much as he did. Same for the middle-class.

At the current time there’s only one candidate who talks about bringing jobs back. He is roundly ridiculed for it.

Donald Trump is redefining the party alright, but he’s defining it back toward’s it’s traditions, a supporter of a robust economy and ACTUAL (no smoke and mirrors) full employment.

Trump wants the middle-class to survive. Glad someone does.

It doesn’t HAVE to be a lasting split IF the party
will support whoever is the nominee.

If they won’t, THEN they have split from the
base and will deserve what ever happens to them.

“If Trump or Cruz wins the White House, then my side of the party has to re-evaluate who we are, what we stand for, and I’d be willing to do that,” Mr. Graham said. “But if Trump or Cruz loses the presidency, would their supporters re-evaluate their views on immigration and other issues that would grow the party? If they do that, we can come back together. If they don’t, the party probably splits in a permanent way.”

Just like the socialists, communists and America haters that took over the Democrat party , us right wingers who love this country and respect the Constitution are better off trying to take over the Republican party rather then trying to establish a new 3rd political party. -tom

The good news re the upcoming demise of the GOPe, continues to roll in.

Reminds us of reading and Le Mis about what preceded the French Revolution.

The criminals in control of the DNC and GOPe have to be having nightmares and daytime terrors.

“Republicans are expressing a growing fear that the coming election could be shattering for the party, or reshape it in ways that leave it unrecognizable.”

We can only hope!!! I guess the author regards the GOPe as “Republicans.”

"My only fear is that they survive as a party. Lets hope they don’t."

First, the GOP must die.

Everything else comes after that.

I’m glad the NY Times is concerned about the Republican Party!

Whenever, the NYSlimes/LA Slimes, Compost, Newsweak, Slime, ABCNNBCBS and other liberal controlled mediots say they are concerned, we know that they are really scared of what is happening to their dark/evil world.

If people would have listened to that simple logic 6 years ago once we all had our noses rubbed in it good and hard, we would not be in this mess today.

Well, the GOPe could end it all by just signing a loyalty oath saying they will support whoever wins the Primary....

Just like they told us to do for years.

Who cares if the dishonest wing (gop-e) withers and dissolves? They are a major problem.

After the death of the GOP, we can choose to build a new party from the ashes, or we can form a new party from whole cloth.

But any notion this "faction" will get with the program of the GOPe should one of them win, is delusional. While they talk about coming over to our way of thinking (spineless bastards, still), if we win the White House, we don't waste our energy thinking about how to accommodate them.

And never will.
