John McCain’s cold-blooded revenge on Ted Cruz
WashPo ^ | 1/7/16 | C. Cilizza

A great man once said: The arc of the moral universe is long, and it bends toward revenge.

John McCain proved the power of revenge on Wednesday night when asked about his longtime nemesis Ted Cruz's eligibility to be president, despite being born in Canada.

"I don't know the answer to that," McCain said on the "Chris Merrill Show" on Wednesday. "I know it came up in my race because I was born in Panama, but I was born in the Canal Zone, which is a territory....

Boom goes the dynamite.

It's no secret that Cruz is hated by McCain and lots and lots of the Washington establishment. McCain famously/infamously called Cruz (and a few other tea party types) "wacko birds", he later apologized, and has repeatedly clashed with the Texas senator over what he believes to be the latter's tendency to grandstand. (McCain detractors will roll their eyes at the idea of him being apoplectic over other people grandstanding.)

What has been less clear is how the GOP establishment's white hot hatred for Cruz could manifest itself in the Republican presidential primary. This is how.

By McCain giving a "you know, that's a good question" response to the question of whether Cruz is eligible to be president, he keeps the story, not a good one for the Texas senator, very much alive.

Now, the media narrative becomes that it's not just Donald Trump saying things because (a) he's Donald Trump and (b) it's in Trump's political interest to attack Cruz since he trails him in Iowa. It's the 2008 Republican presidential nominee who, oh by the way, went through a very real back and forth over his own eligibility to run back then.

McCain shivving Cruz won't drastically damage

If Cruz couldn’t run, it’d be out by now. Dems wouldn’t sit on it when they could humiliate their bete noir.

Somebody needs to take Juan back to the bingo hall...

“I’ve never heard anyone that wanted to deprive Cruz of his citizenship.”

That’s essentially what they are saying when they say he isn’t eligible to be President.

There are only 2 types of citizens: natural born, and naturalized. Ted Cruz was never naturalized, so if he is not natural born (as they contend), then he must not even be a citizen at all. Of course that is ludicrous, but that is the logical result if you believe this attack.

As we learned in 2008, as long as the GOP certifies that Cruz is natural born, that is all the verification anyone will ever ask for.

You would think Ted took his strawberries.

By the way I believe some moonbat left wing demonrat in Florida or somewhere....was the one who said he would take Ted to court if he won the election......a left wing birther.

Trump was just being Trump.

They'll kiss and make up before it is all over.

Unless Donald gets a new set of booties.

:-)

He wouldn’t, and Cruz wouldn’t.

I think it is better for Cruz and for conservatives to get this out of the way now, and not a few months from now. If this has no legs, it will die out over the next several weeks. Better now than a manufactured hysteria at the convention for the purpose of steering the nomination to Rubio or Romney or some such. (BTW, call me crazy, but I think Romney is itching to ride to the GOPe’s rescue.)

When the most conservative candidate for President in a generation isn’t “American enough” for supposedly conservative voters, one has to wonder if the country has ANY future.

Isn’t Hillary sufficient proof that one can be born in the USA, to two citizen parents, and HATE YOUR OWN COUNTRY?!?!!

Ha! You mean like Trump was a pro-abortion, pro-socialist health care Democrat, until he saw an opportunity to run for President on the Republican side?

No it isn’t. Nobody is taking away his citizenship.

All blarney! You can be a citizen and still not eligible to be President.

I am really not worried about Trump. Things will boil out as they are intended to by the Man upstairs.

What I want is someone who truly understands the role of the presidency. It is not a CEO position. He is a moral leader who has a special mission as he stands for us and keeps the Constitution close within eyeshot at all times. That is why he is the only person that all the people vote for. It was James Wilson who suggested it. The presidency was designed to be connected to all the people because of his special mission.

The only problem is no one is listening to John McCain. Even the media barely cares what he has to say anymore.

Idiot McCain thought the media loved him; however, he found out differently (for a short time) when he was running against the real thing, Barack Hussein Obama. This low intelligence person is unable to think correctly on most subjects.

However, at this time we need a leader, not a role player.

Trump/Cruz is just what we need.

Great move, Donald. If this sinks Cruz (which it won't), you've just given the nomination to Rubio. Genius.

I am no Trumpian cool-aid drinker so I say this honestly. I don't know why Trump did this, but I think the impact is it is going to turn this race into a two person race. Why do I say this, because it draws attention that Cruz is an outsider.

My friend, I’ve never bashed Trump until this issue. And , I do so now, because he’s made an incredibly stupid political move,if his true desire is the nomination.

Months ago, he went after Carson on a vicious level. At that time, I said that wasn’t smart politics because Carson was going to fall on his own, and all Trump accomplished was to elevate Cruz and alienate Carson supporters. And that’s what happened.

Now, he raised this birther issue. Now, in all reason, should Cruz be hurt by this issue, do you think his supporters are going to gravitate to Trump??? Of course they’re not—they will hate Donald (as all the supporters of the candidates Trump’s personally attacked hate Donald).

All the support will end up with Rubio, as against Donald’s 35%-— and we’re stuck with the establishment again.

It’s just stupid politics. Smart politics— let some surrogate raise the issue. Then, Trump says- “no, Ted’s a natural citizen imo”-—— while he let’s the McCains take Cruz apart. Then, Trump gets Cruz supporters..

But, not now. Trump lost the nomination here, I really believe that.

If that’s the best that McCain has...

But then again, I’m sure he’d be much nicer if commenting about a fellow Democrat.
