A great man once said: The arc of the moral universe is long, and it bends toward revenge.
John McCain proved the power of revenge on Wednesday night when asked about his longtime nemesis Ted Cruz's eligibility to be president, despite being born in Canada.
"I don't know the answer to that," McCain said on the "Chris Merrill Show" on Wednesday. "I know it came up in my race because I was born in Panama, but I was born in the Canal Zone, which is a territory....
Boom goes the dynamite.
It's no secret that Cruz is hated by McCain and lots and lots of the Washington establishment. McCain famously/infamously called Cruz (and a few other tea party types) "wacko birds", he later apologized, and has repeatedly clashed with the Texas senator over what he believes to be the latter's tendency to grandstand. (McCain detractors will roll their eyes at the idea of him being apoplectic over other people grandstanding.)
What has been less clear is how the GOP establishment's white hot hatred for Cruz could manifest itself in the Republican presidential primary. This is how.
By McCain giving a "you know, that's a good question" response to the question of whether Cruz is eligible to be president, he keeps the story, not a good one for the Texas senator, very much alive.
Now, the media narrative becomes that it's not just Donald Trump saying things because (a) he's Donald Trump and (b) it's in Trump's political interest to attack Cruz since he trails him in Iowa. It's the 2008 Republican presidential nominee who, oh by the way, went through a very real back and forth over his own eligibility to run back then.
McCain shivving Cruz won't drastically damage

Great move, Donald. If this sinks Cruz (which it won't), you've just given the nomination to Rubio. Genius.
Thanks to McCain, however, Cruz has an opportunity to go on the attack on this issue---i.e. the Gop-e is so desperate and fearful of him as an outside reformer, they'd go so far as to deprive him of his citizenship.
Even the media barely cares what he has to say anymore.
It will backfire.
Being hated by McCain is a badge of honor.
There’s only a plus side to being hated by JM.
I’ve never heard anyone that wanted to deprive Cruz of his citizenship.
Sometimes the rhetoric just gets away from the facts.
I really don’t worry much about this issue because Obama set the precedent.
Cruz is safe on this one, at least with the GOP.
That, and the fact we have Democrat infiltrators running the political apparatus of the Republican Party.
The Same John McCain that had this resolution recognizing that John Sidney McCain, III, is a natural born citizen?
It is only an issue if they want it to be an issue:
III
110th CONGRESS
2d Session
S. RES. 511
IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES
April 10, 2008
Mrs. McCaskill (for herself, Mr. Leahy, Mr. Obama, Mr. Coburn, Mrs. Clinton, and Mr. Webb) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the Committee on the Judiciary
April 24, 2008
Reported by Mr. Leahy, without amendment
April 30, 2008
Considered and agreed to
RESOLUTION
Recognizing that John Sidney McCain, III, is a natural born citizen.
Whereas the Constitution of the United States requires that, to be eligible for the Office of the President, a person must be a "natural born Citizen" of the United States;
Whereas the term "natural born Citizen", as that term appears in Article II, Section 1, is not defined in the Constitution of the United States;
Whereas there is no evidence of the intention of the Framers or any Congress to limit the constitutional rights of children born to Americans serving in the military nor to prevent those children from serving as their country’s President;
Whereas such limitations would be inconsistent with the purpose and intent of the "natural born Citizen" clause of the Constitution of the United States, as evidenced by the First Congress's own statute defining the term "natural born Citizen";
Whereas the well-being of all citizens of the United States is preserved and enhanced by the men and women who are assigned to serve our country outside of our national borders;
Whereas previous presidential candidates were born outside of the United States of America and were understood to be eligible to be President; and
Whereas John Sidney McCain, III, was born to American citizens on an American military base in the Panama Canal Zone in 1936: Now, therefore, be it
That John Sidney McCain, III, is a "natural born Citizen" under Article II, Section 1, of the Constitution of the United States.
This is what passes for analysis at Washpo?
As is a hatred FOR McCain : )
Perhaps the reason the establishment hates Ted Cruz is that he was such a solid member of that establishment, before the tea party changed everything.
GO KELLI WARD!!!
Lord I can’t stand birthers on either “side”.
Some have mired themselves so deeply in ignorant conspiracy theories that the conservative message is lost and neigh unto dead.
It’s not lost among us, but it is lost among voters we need. What do they hear? Ted Cruz is a Canadian and a bunch of nitwits take over a bird sanctuary and can’t even bring enough socks.
If we don’t change ... NOW ... we will wake up one day and wonder where the Conservatism went.
Another endorsement for Ted Cruz.
By his words and actions over the past decade, John McCain has dishonored and disgraced himself and his military career and, by association, he has disgraced and dishonored his family. He is truly a sad and pathetic old man, thankfully near the end of his relevancy to politics.
The GOPe, doing all they can to help Hillary.
Where’s the photo of McCain smiling broadly with Hillary? What about McCain surrendering his 2008 campaign 10 days before the general election telling everyone that Obama is a swell guy and no one has to be concerned about Obama being president.
Yeah, that John McCain.
The elites are muddying the waters on the “natural born” issue.
They are preparing us for a non-American president.
Are you speaking of the same establishment that Trump funded with massive donations????
“nobody listening to Mclame”
the Maverick!- war hero! say it isn’t so-
Well... the people who run his life-
wife, daughter, etc. are pro homosexual-
so they have accepted this old fool into their studios.
and I am sure given talking points to bash any conservative.
