WAS there a father on the scene. Maybe there wasn’t and this was part of a picture that got the girl lusting after the boy. She wanted some kind of love from a guy. If not in this case it happens in a lot of others.

Right or wrong, that’s why for most of history they married the girls off at 12 - 13! Just saying....
The fact she has to call in cousins plus lack of mention of a father suggests she’s a single mother trying to prevent her daughter from repeating her mistakes.
And as a mom, I think she did just fine protecting her daughter.
