...Trump supporters are at best only nominally tethered to the political process. According to those pollsters shrewd enough to ask, few have voted in a general election and fewer still have participated in nomination contests.
The election day toll of this dynamic is already evident in those surveys with respondent controls that screen out all previous non-voters or those who have self-identified as very like to vote this year.
In polls that measure sentiment simply of registered Republicans, Mr. Trump leads the field in most national and state surveys, like Quinnipiac Universityâs snapshot of Iowa last month. But in those surveys with stricter respondent screens, like those employed by the Des Moines Register, which weeded out respondents who had not previously caucused, Trump trails by double digits.

Yes.. you’re sure right!
we are so stupid for having Trump.
Gosh, you guys are going to win big, that’s for sure!!
No need to even turn out.
And ESPECIALLY if you run HilLIARy! We’d sure lose if you run HilLIARy.
I haven’t read Time since 1978.
My favorite source for news and commentary is IBD.
Plus Obama handed the election to Trump with the gun control EO.
I believe Trump is the only candidate that will bring out every dirty thing the Clintons have ever done..and believe Hillary is scared to death of him..Which is good..
Time really doesn’t get it - that The Donald has transformed politics from a process to a movement.
Why do these people bother to show up to the rallies. Take a hard look at crowds. And they are growing. It’s like a rock star.
Get up and Dance.

Thanks for the recon, but really not necessary since it’s Time.
Time needs to get a Life.
Just like many of Trumpâs supporters in the polls donât even have to vote.

As I noted elsewhere, the “likely voter issue” is most important in caucus states, less important in closed primary states , and least important in open primary states.
Also, all would be prognosticators would be wise to keep in mind that applying typical voting patterns to an enraged electorate is a recipe for “shocking” vote tallies.
In the end, it will come down, as it always does, to the undecideds. And, despite what every pollster and political savant wishes you to believe, there’s NO way to predicted how undecideds will break.
So. The “seasoned vets” who HAVE been going to previous caucus meetings, who HAVE been previously supporting previous GROPe-selected candidates in previous caucus meetings, who HAD BEEN supporting earlier repubbie candidates ... THOSE do not support Trump (nor Cruz)?
What surprise!
See, it is the NEW caucus supporters who ARE opposing the previous GROPe-selected candidates who ARE supporting Trump and Cruz!
Trump is a populist. The supporters of populists are somewhat fickle, but in a way that is not helpful to the GOPe. They tend not to show up if their guy is not selected as the nominee. So, the GOPe has too be stuffed, and Conservative Republicans need to welcome Trump’s populist base. Then, there can be a good win against the Uniparty, whether with Trump or Cruz.
“Does this really believe that the thousands that show up at the Trump rallies are NOT going to go out and vote for him?”
I am a die-hard Trump supporter, but the same could be said for Romney’s rallies leading up to election day. That’s what worries me about this election, that the butthurt Cruz supporters will sit home and pout rather than do the CONSERVATIVE thing and vote to save our country from its socialist nightmare!!
Sure. They'll freeze in long lines to see Trump in a rally, but won't sit a spell in a heated room to caucus for Trump. They are delusional.
So speaks the political correctness of ruling elitism. Liars and scoundrels.
You can smell the desperation and fear.
Time Magazine represents clueless liberal elites...
They really believes people who will stand four hours in the cold to hear Trump speak will not spend 15 minutes driving in their warm car to the polls to vote.
I kid you not - that's how out-of-touch they are...
