Rep. Jim Gooch becomes second Democrat to join House GOP, pushing Democrats to 50-48 majority

tate Rep. Jim Gooch became the second member of the House Democratic caucus to change his party affiliation on Monday, informing leaders of both parties in the chamber of his decision to seek re-election as a Republican earlier in the day.

Gooch, of Providence, has served in the legislature since 1995, chairing the House Committee on Natural Resources and Environment.

In a lengthy statement, Gooch said he informed House Speaker Greg Stumbo and House Minority Floor Leader Jeff Hoover of his decision in an email, calling his move "a personal one, free of any negotiation for personal benefit to me."

He acknowledged that national politics played a role in his party switch, saying that he "cannot support any of the Democrats running for President."

"At a recent political gathering Speaker Stumbo acknowledged that the Democrat party was the 'Party of Barack Obama,'" Gooch said in a statement. "I deliberated that thought and I came to the conclusion that I could be a member of the party of Obama, but that I cannot be a member of the party that SUPPORTS BARRACK OBAMAS POLICIES! The majority of Democrats do support his radical agenda."

Republicans in West Virginia have control because big daddy Byrd isn’t there to give the state any more goodies plus the coal mines are dying out thanks to ZeRo’s insane policies. Darnest thing to it was the UMW was endorsing ZEro back both in 2008 and in 2012 despite what he was saying he was going to do in regards to coal mining industry. I Would give anything if Buckharless was still alive he would have made one hell of governor in West Virginia.

WV is returning back to its pre-Depression roots (it had been Republican from 1895-1933). Can probably give considerable credit to Zero sending it back to the GOP (not a single county voted for him in 2012, even the heavy Dem areas with the dying coal region).

Buck Harless ? This fella, I presume:

Switching just to get re-elected as the Dems fear a Reagan type sweep this year. He’ll be a RINO.

Not a single country voted against Capito for Senate either.

Gotta win that Governorship though.

In the whole scheme of things, what difference does it make? The GOPe now are Democrats, so it’ll be business as usual.

What's the relevancy?

There's NO difference between the supposed two partys.

We have a uni-party system busy screwing the taxpayers and serving special interests.

The rat primary seems to be pretty nasty, hopefully that will help ding up the rat nominee, Jeff Kessler would probably be easier to beat than this slick SOB, Justice.

WV State Senator Daniel Hall who switched from D to R has retardedly resigned for a private sector job, leaving control up in the air.

I saw that. Even if the Dems pick up the seat, it will be a tie, and that’s unlikely to last long. The momentum is with the GOP in the state to reclaim the majority for a long time to come (barring a Whig-level crack-up).

It’s a seat in Wyoming county, lot’s of corruption in that county as well as Mingo, and McDowell, and Logan, however I agree with with fieldmarshaldj, that the Republicans can keep the whole legislature if they stay on offense. They should really hit the commie rats on ZEro’s gun control action because next to God and Job’s guns are the third thing West Virginians care about.
