Donald Trump’s Strongest Supporters: A Certain Kind of Democrat (Nationwide Map of Trump Support)
NY Times ^

Posted on 12/31/2015 1:47:01 AM PST by springwater13

Donald Trump holds a dominant position in national polls in no small part because he is extremely strong among people on the periphery of the Republican coalition.

He is strongest among Republicans who are less affluent, less educated and less likely to turn out to vote. His very best voters are self-identified Republicans who nonetheless are registered as Democrats. It's a coalition that's concentrated in the South, Appalachia and the industrial North, according to data provided to The Upshot by Civis Analytics, a Democratic data firm.

Mr. Trump's huge advantage among these groups poses a challenge for his campaign, because it may not have the turnout operation necessary to mobilize irregular voters.

Mr. Trump appears to hold his greatest strength among people like these - registered Democrats who identify as Republican leaners - with 43 percent of their support, according to the Civis data. Similarly, many of Mr. Trump’s best states are those with a long tradition of Democrats who vote Republican in presidential elections, like West Virginia.

Mr. Trump's strength among traditionally Democratic voters could pose some problems for his campaign. Many states bar voters registered with the other party from participating in partisan primaries. Other states go further, not allowing unaffiliated voters to vote in a primary; in the G.O.P. race, for example, that would mean restricting the electorate to those registered as Republicans - one of Mr. Trump’s weakest groups. This group of states includes many favorable to Mr. Trump, like Florida, Pennsylvania and New York.

I Haven’t ever voted for a Democrat for any office. I’ve voted in all elections since I was eligible in the 80s. I’m a college educated professional. I attended a packed Trump rally with my family in my Blue state. I will definitely show up to vote, and I will be voting Trump. Can’t wait for Feb & March, I think it will be a tsunami in the primaries when all of us dumb, uneducated, fringe voters come out of our shacks to vote! </sarc>

By the end of the article, the asshole author was blaming racism.

Man, they have NO other playbook.

Apart from percentages, many more black voters voted in 2008 and 2012 than had voted in previous elections. Even if she gets the same percent of the black vote, there probably will not be as many voters.

Me too. 2 degrees, these people don’t have a clue. Or, they’re just whistling past the graveyard.

If they have to go through such gyrations to "prove" that Trump has problems, they must be really really afraid of him.

Trump and Cruz are the only two that both the GOP/GOPe/RNC and Left fear and hate....

Using Google searches on racism to determine how racist a section of the country is, is typical “make the data give you the answer you want”. Except they don’t figure in how many of those searches are by blacks.

But the South is racist and not educated, so they say. Well, bless their little hearts.

The New York slimes is simply another organ for the ‘RAT Party...any constitutional conservative who subscribes to the NYT can do a patriotic duty and CANCEL THEIR SUBSCRIPTION.

The NYT is following their standard playbook and, having failed with other approaches, simply infers that American citizens who support a conservative are uneducated, racist rubes. CANCEL YOUR SUBSCRIPTION, FOLKS.

This is a nice civil thread so far (no anti-Trump and no anti-Cruz jihad), let’s keep it up and remember who our real enemies are.

I think we can work on them. Hell, you’d probably get a bunch of Hispanics voting for either Cruz or Rubio just due to their name alone.

interesting read on level of trump support. trump does best with less educated, older yellow dogs. the ny times implies trumpettes are poor, uneducated, and easy to command. trump does poorly with mormons. no surprise. mormons have condemned trump’s muslim ban. also mormons still hope of mitt romney emerging as the nominee out of a brokered convention.

The libs rant that Trump has a lot of support; but will they come to the polls? Trump supporters are so fed up with the corruption in DC that they can’t wait to get to the polls. It is likely Trump will be sitting in the oval office....January ‘17.

These conservative, working-class Democrats are the same people Reagan appealed to. It's about time somebody reached out to them again. My family is from Appalachia, and it makes me sick to think of how many of my people still vote Democrat because they truly believe the Republican Party is the party of rich oligarchs who don't care about regular folks.

good point. The enthusiasm just won’t be there. But we definitely need to diminish what enthusiasm there is. There’s a weakness here that Donald Trump is uniquely qualified to exploit.

NY Slimes has no problem with the ignorant classes voting Democrat. If they wise up and get off the plantation, that’s when they bitch and moan and call it a problem.

As for Willard, he has as much of a chance of being coronated at the convention after a Trump landslide primary victory as Joe Biden has of spontaneously being inducted into MENSA.

I’m just glad voting gets tighter and tighter in Michigan.

We don’t have a closed primary but you can’t split a primary ticket and vote GOP in one race and democrat in the others. If a democrat wants to vote GOP they have to sacrifice every other democrat primary race. You get either a democrat or a republican ballot.

We’re also eliminating straight ticket voting in the general. No more checking “R” or “D” and walking away. Either go down the ballot and vote in every race or skip them.

Bravo bumpkins! Yer doin’ great! Keep up the good work turnip truck patriots!
