He’ll be missed.
Saw Lemon and the HGT’s play twice as a kid, still remember it vividly.
Red Klotz, the man who formed and led the teams that lost to the Globetrotters 14,000 times published an autobiography a year before he died at age 93: http://www.amazon.com/Legend-Red-Klotz-Basketball-Leader/dp/1935232754/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1451317584&sr=1-1&keywords=Legend+of+Red+Klotz%3A
Fun fact: both Meadow and Michael Jordan grew up in Wilmington NC (although MJ was born in Brooklyn) - not sure what they put in the water in that part of coastal North Carolina, but they sure know how to grow basketball players!
Sad. A great athlete and a gentleman. Thanks for the laughs. RIP
I also got to see him play, and got the glitter thrown on me!
I saw them back in the 1980s. They were great. RIP, Mr. Lemon.
I got to see these guys way way back in 1971 when they came to Columbus, Georgia while I was stationed at Fort Benning. They were a complete hoot. Meadowlark was fantastic. He did all the tricks that he performed on their televised games. Back in those days they were on the old ABC Wide World of Sports a lot. He was a great “performer”!!! You got your money’s worth and went home with sore ribs from all the laughing.
Saw them twice in the early 70’s. I was a HUGE fan of the Globetrotters. Meadowlark Lemon and Curly Neal were my favorite bball players of all time.
Rest in peace Mr. Lemon.
Of course today we have the modern-day version of the Washington Generals, it’s called the Republican Party.
Love that way-back machine! Those were the days when cartoons were awesome.
I have an autographed pic of Meadowlark Lemon, given to me by an older cousin. They came to our small town, as part of their tour.
RIP
Not just cartoons but they had live games TV specials. Great stuff.
In the 50’s in high school we had a math teacher and coach who was about 5’ 9”, portly, bald as a cue ball and had a great sense of humor. The Globetrotters played a game at our local junior college and the coach was one of the Refs.
During the first half Meadowlark was called for a couple fouls by baldy and Meadowlark would massage the top of his head and of course baldy would really make a scene, the spectators would just howl.
In the second half Meadowlark pulled a scraggly wig out of his jersey and slapped it on the Refs head, it was a scream.
What a great player, entertainer and gentleman he was.
RIP Meadowlark.
Loved watching him as a little kid.
My funniest memory of Meadowlark’s game was in New York when he stole the ball from a Washington General guard and was doing a fast break towards the other end being chased by the guard, the referee was of course running towards the other end as well.
He then passed the ball to the confused referee, who went on to make the lay-up. The Crowd howled and the referee “angrily” whistled and said the basket ( he made ) did not count !!
It was a huge riot !!
GREAT MEMORIES !!
