Not going to flame you, but here is the crux of the matter. For a man, clothing is practical, but, for a woman, much of her wardrobe is also ornamental.

If I did not regularly cull his wardrobe my husband would still be wearing fades, out-dated 30-year-old shirts. Because he is practical. Periodically — not as often as I would like, but I have to compromise — I convince him that he needs some new clothing, and I buy the items. Not complaining, as I have disdain for men who are too fastidious with their clothing choices.

We women, on the other hand, like to update our wardrobes periodically. I do not like the act of shopping, but I do like having something new and fashionable to wear for an occasion. And, while my husband rolls his eyes about my need for fashion changes, he appreciates the fact that I take my time to look nice when we go out — make-up, matching clothing, jewelry, etc. — as opposed to wearing the sweat pants and old tennis shoes that I wear around the house.

The handbags you refer to are practical on one level to hold various items, but they are mainly decorative, so a woman does not “need” a new handbag except to complete the look she is going for.

As for shoes, when a man is dressed up his shoes are likely to be black or brown, and there are not too many choices of heel heights. They are a practical consideration for the man. For a woman, the shoes, like the bag, are part of the whole outfit.
