Cruz's debate win means it's intervention time for Trump supporters
The Hill ^ | 12/1715 | Ed Zipperer

Posted on 12/17/2015 4:26:22 PM PST by VinL

Are you a conservative? Are you rocking so much conservative street cred that you chose to stay home rather than vote for Republican nominees Mitt Romney in 2012 or John McCain in 2008 because you consider them undercover liberals, a couple of donkeys outfitted with fake trunks? Do you look at the big government left and the big government right and have trouble telling them apart? Do you currently support Donald Trump?

If you answered "yes" to the above questions, this intervention is for you.

I don't want to make you angry. I don't want you to make you scream at me on Twitter. I don't want to make you call Rush Limbaugh and tattle on me. I just want to show you how your support for Trump is affecting the people who care about you and what the consequences will be.

According to the Mayo Clinic, you can't argue with facts or with my "emotional response to the problem," so I'm going to try to do this using Mayo Clinic intervention-approved "I" statements.

I was upset and hurt when you supported Donald Trump because ...

No real conservative has emerged from a Republican primary since Ronald Reagan. George H.W. Bush, Bob Dole, George W. Bush, John McCain, Mitt Romney — let's face it, the establishment has dominated the primary for a long time. No surprise. That's whom it was invented to cater to.

But now — thanks to President Obama's incompetence — the pendulum is swinging hard to the right. According to the Realclearpolitics average, only 43 percent of Americans approve of the job the president is doing. This is finally the time!

Right now, you, the conservative base of the Republican party, have the best candidate they've ever had. Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas) is smart, he's a great debater, he isn't afraid to mention Jesus in his ads and he never backs down on his positions. He's Voldemort-level character in the minds of most Democrats (Voldemort is the bad guy from that book you probably told your grandkids not to read. They read it anyway).

Cruz outshined every other candidate in last night's debate. He was strong on foreign policy without promising to trample the Constitution. You love the Constitution! Remember?

Cruz schooled Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.) on illegal immigration:

There was "a time for choosing," as Reagan put it. Where there was a battle over amnesty and some chose, like Rubio, to stand with Obama and [Democratic New York Sen.] Chuck Schumer and support a massive amnesty plan. Others chose to stand with [Republican Alabama Sen.] Jeff Sessions and [Iowa Rep.] Steve King and the American people and secure the border.

He outlined conservative priorities:

Cutting taxes, cutting regulation, unleashing small businesses and rebuilding the military to defeat radical Islamic terrorism — our strategy is simple. We win, they lose. We've done it before and we can do it again.

Cruz is the first bona-fide conservative candidate I've seen in my lifetime who stands a chance of making it all the way to the White House. But, instead of seizing the opportunity to elect a true conservative, you have chosen to cast your primary vote for Trump.

I was upset and hurt when you supported Trump because ...

Trump wants to grow the size of government, spend massive amounts of taxpayer money and trample the Constitution.

He uses Democratic Party talking points to attack true conservatives. Last week, he called Cruz a "maniac." Last night, he walked it back, but only because it gave his conservative supporters a glimpse of who he really is.

Cruz believes what you believe. Trump pretends to believe some nasty caricature of what polling data told him you believe.

I was upset and hurt when you supported Trump because ...

The big-spending establishment Republicans failed us. The politically correct, identity-politics-obsessed bigger-spending liberals failed us. In 2016, America will finally be ready for a conservative voice, but that voice won't be there. Instead, we'll hear the voices of Trump and probably Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton arguing over whose version of single-payer universal healthcare is better. There will be no conservative voice and, ironically, it will be you who silenced it.

You, and Cruz supporters like you do your candidate a huge disservice by forcibly alienating those who support a candidate other than the one you chose using terms like "Trumpkins" and applying the tactics of the left in attacking them.

You also do a huge disservice misrepresenting your candidates positions on key issues such as immigration, TPP, etc.. twisting and turning Cruz's words into pretzel logic.

Just stop.

No candidate is perfect. Your guy isn't, my guy isn't, no one's guy is. Stop pretending yours is some messiah of the Conservative movement. He's not. Is he better than damn' near any other candidate that's come down the pike in a good long time? YES. Perfect? No. Stop trying making him out to be.

I will vote for either Trump or Cruz in the General Election because both are anti GOP-E and would in my opinion, be far, far, far better Presidents than anything the Democrats have to offer and most especially, the POS in the White House today, Barack Hussein Obama.

BTW: I don't agree with either Trump or Cruz on every issue. I think both are wrong on H1B's for example. I think both are wrong on H2B's also. (For those who don't know what that is, go google what our Congress just did to American truck drivers, Disney employees, seasonal workers and laborers in damn' near every union, selling them out for cheap, foreign immigrant workers.) So keep it up, keep pissing off those who don't directly support your candidate or consider him their second choice. You'll drive enough away that your candidate's chances of ever winning the white house, much less the nomination are going to be zip.

I think that was a very good statement. The rest need to step up to the plate and say something. I want to know what each and every one of them have to say about it. We should then post the statements here on FR.

And also, I am willing to vote for Trump if he wins the primaries, for what that’s worth. Jeb-no. Rubio-I don’t think so, but I’m feeling a little desperate now. I hope the rest don’t even come close to being in play.

The childish rhetoric and name-calling just looks divisive to me also, when more than ever, conservatives need to link arms. We have the left to try to divide us, we don’t need to do it to ourselves.

I'll vote for either Trump or Cruz. I'd be happier to vote for Trump if for no other reason than to see the complete, total meltdown of the lying liberal lamestream media ala 1994 when the Republican's took the House & Senate away from Bill Clinton.

Watching Judy Woodruff on CNN cry "what's happening to our country?!" that night was truly special. :-)

While Trump would cause a complete liberal media meltdown, democrat progressive liberal heads will no doubt be heard going "POP GOES THE WEASEL" across the country and that's something I really, really want to see.

Then there's the sheer panic that would grip the GOP-E which would give me true joy.

Not sure Cruz what the response of electing Ted Cruz would be, somehow I think it would just be less entertaining to watch, but a Cruz Presidency? As much as I disagree with him on three critical issues, I could live with that. Be a damn' sight better than any other alternative IMO.

It is the truth, you are blinded by something trumpee I don’t see.
He will do anything to win and trumpees are being played.
He suggested his liberal sister for the SC.
I know who I trust to put conservatives on SC and all across the country.
The real man in the room. The real conservative. This dude is dead on and why trumpees blow my mind.
I also apologize if this hurts your feelings and feel free to call me names as your hero calls peoples names every day. I will understand. You are at one with him.
He makes me cringe.

-- Thanks for the info. I still say the primary system is grossly unfair. --

There is a more fundamental problem, that being the ascension of political parties. Primaries are a ruse to fool the public that the government is legitimate "because the vote."

Cruz does not have a 2nd Amendment policy on his website.
https://www.tedcruz.org/ (I have searched the site, really, but someone else check)

Carson does - https://www.bencarson.com/issues/second-amendment

Protect the Second Amendment

The right of law-abiding citizens to own firearms is fundamental to our liberty.
Second Amendment

It was no accident that our Founding Fathers enshrined the right to own firearms as the 2nd element of the Bill of Rights, immediately after establishing our free speech rights. I cannot and will not support any efforts to weaken The 2nd Amendment.

The 2nd Amendment is a central pillar of our Constitution. Our Founding Fathers added it explicitly in order to protect freedom in the United States of America. It provides our citizens the right to protect themselves from threats foreign or domestic.

Marco Rubio - https://marcorubio.com/

The Second Amendment Is A Constitutional Right, Plain and Simple

The Second Amendment is about the American Dream.

I’ve always believed that the Second Amendment is about much more than the right to bear arms. At its core, the Second Amendment is about the American Dream.

The American Dream means having the opportunity to achieve happiness, which is possible, first and foremost, when you can start and raise a family in a home that is stable, safe and secure.

The safety of our families is not something we should be forced to hope the government can provide – it’s a fundamental right that every American deserves.

Dissenters try and stigmatize gun owners, but as we all know, responsibly exercising one’s Second Amendment right could mean the difference between life and death.

That’s one reason I, myself, have a concealed weapons permit. I have an A rating from the NRA, and recently, I introduced legislation to restore Second Amendment rights in the District of Columbia.

I’ve done all of that because I believe the Second Amendment is foundational to who we are as a country. It’s about preserving our God-given right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Anyone else?

Are you prepared to go into coalition with patriotic Democrats who want to Make America Great Again, but who also want a bigger state with higher taxes, or do you prefer to watch it burn?

That is what brought us 8 wonderful years of Ronald Reagan. It only took GHWB 3 years to undo much of that good.

Trump's tax plan was praised by Larry Kudlow (no lover of Trump) as setting our economy on fire. Not higher taxes but a lot more revenue from a growing economy. Remember, government produces NOTHING.

The only times I remember religion being a big deal in the presidential election was 1. Kennedy, first Catholic running, 2. Jimmah Carter, born again who did get crossover votes for that and 3. Romney, who unfortunately, had too many Christians stay home. Eisenhower, Johnson, Nixon, Reagan, GHWB, Clinton, GWB - not an issue.

Don't be so sure. Yesterday, someone here on FR posted a picture of Rubio with McCain and what appeared to be Syrian "Rebels" (read that: NOW ISIS) somewhere in the last year or two.

That picture alone should be Rubio's undoing IMO.

But then, Rubio's not really going anywhere. Can't remember who said it, but isn't Rubio nothing more than the Republican Party's John Edwards with a really, really bad haircut?

People might take you serious if you posted a rational thoughtful statement. When you engage in the standard Leftist debate tactics of hysteric hyperbole and personal insult, Conservative just look at your posts and laugh.

Cruz does not have a 2nd Amendment policy on his website.

Ted Cruz defended the Second Amendment and the right of every single American to keep and bear arms in front of the United States Supreme Court and did so successfully. He won that case.

His credentials on this issue are impeccable.

IMO, he doesn't need a 2nd Amendment policy on his website. It's been well established.
