Turkey says its patience with Russia 'has a limit': newspaper

ROME (Reuters) - Turkey's foreign minister said Ankara's patience with Russia "has a limit" after Moscow's "exaggerated" reaction to a weekend naval incident between the two countries, an Italian newspaper reported on Monday.

A Russian destroyer fired warning shots at a Turkish vessel in the Aegean on Sunday to avoid a collision and summoned the Turkish military attache over the incident..

"Ours was only a fishing boat, it seems to me that the reaction of the Russian naval ship was exaggerated," Mevlut Cavusoglu told Italian daily Corriere della Sera in an interview.

"Russia and Turkey certainly have to re-establish the relations of trust that we have always had, but our patience has a limit," Cavusoglu said.

The incident is likely to heighten tensions between the two nations who are at odds over Syria and Turkey's downing of a Russian warplane last month.

Cavusoglu said Russia had already "put itself in a ridiculous position" with accusations by its President Vladimir Putin that Turkey had shot down the jet to protect oil supplies from Islamic State.

OK, we've got Iran and Russia operating in Syria after Obama destabilized another Middle Eastern country and Erdogan yakking it up.

Great. Just great.

How very Turkish of them. They are mad because of the results from their provocations.

Go ahead, Turkey.

P*ss Putin off.

That will result in fewer muzzies.

Good for him, good for us, and good for civilization.

I wish we had a leader.

Don’t shoot down planes, Erdogan. Don’t urge your vibrant female population to not smile too much. In other words, I wish you’d get out of town and join the turf club which might bring back civilization to Turkey, if that’s possible.

“Only a fishing boat...” I think that the Russians remember the USS Cole even if we don’t.

Ahhh... I think that bridge has already been crossed.

Russia on Turkey - gone in sixty seconds. Turkey is about the size of Texas. Russia spans eleven time zones.

Ankara’s patience with Russia “has a limit”

Doesn’t sound like a smart thing for the person w/o nukes to say.

There’s a genius commenter (not) at Yahoo that has no idea, apparently, about the USS Cole. He thinks the Russian navy is afraid of a little boat for no reason.

In reality, a lot of warships could be sunk or put out of action that way. Across all navies. I think a few more deck guns may have been installed in years past.

“Ours was only a fishing boat”

The Russkies know about the USS Cole. So does everybody else. Politeness demands distance and identification.

It would be our luck to have a ‘real leader’ who would be telling Russia to back off from Turkey. US foreign policy, probably due to the sclerotic nature of Foggy Bottom, is fundamentally cringe-worthy.

"Cole"-style attacks have a long history. The original name for the "destroyer" was "torpedo boat destroyer", a smaller fast ship whose job was to protect big ships from torpedo boats.

Oh, shut it, raghead! Take on the Russians and it will be the last time the Russians lack a warm-water port on the Med.

Are you sure? This entry suggests fishing vessels have right of way:
