The coming cosmic Gold Rush
The New York Post ^ | December 12, 2015 | Post Editorial Board

America’s next Gold Rush might be out of this world.

Literally.

President Obama just signed a law giving prospectors the right to keep — and sell — anything they find in outer space. It’s a vital step in fostering the exploitation of off-earth resources.

Under the US Commercial Space Launch Competitiveness Act of 2015, US citizens “engaged in commercial recovery of an asteroid resource or a space resource” can keep whatever they dig up.

Previous law had left investors nervous about whether they’d be wasting millions to build rockets and mine resources in space — only to later have courts confiscate what they harvested.

I was wondering who gave Barry the right to give away anything in space?

Maybe he just likes signing his American name.

Dear Prospective Human Space Miner,
I’m sorry to inform you that all the available in system real estate is all ready claimed. Should you wish to dispute any claims. please stop by our office on Ceres and we will be glad to file your grievance.

If you wish to take a case before a panel, we will appoint a local representative to argue your case. However, this service is not free, and you will have to pay before leaving Ceres - Please, don’t even think of making this some sort of military issue - your existence in such a debacle would be measured in picoseconds at the slowest.

Thank you for your interest in this matter,
Miners Local 36, Ceres, Culture.

I doubt the Russians and Chinese are just going to sit around waiting for us. They are probably already well along in their own programs if this is feasible.

At present (i.e., at our current level of technology), the most-valuable substance in the Solar System is H2O.

The President didn't "give away" anything. He signed Ted Cruz's bill into law after it passed the House and Senate with slight DNC opposition.

Apart from being pretty, gold's vale is questionable. But you don't need Barry's OK to mine it in space. I actually own outer space and if anyone wants to mine it, knock yourself out. lol

Anyone with the money to do this will have thought it through, and would probably have nothing to do with the U.S. I’d imagine they will build a space port on some island republic near the equator.

This is a news media myth ...

And that is all it is. There has been billons of dollars spent on the ISS to house a few astronauts in low earth orbit. Think moon rocks. The total weight of all the moon rocks is less the 100 lbs. The idea we will mine comets or asteroids or some other planet or moon is so far away ...

Sounds right up Todd Hoffman's alley. I guess the Discovery Channel bailed him out of his South America fails.

We used to refer to them as the Apple Dumpling Gang.

I’d imagine they will build a space port on some island republic near the equator.

In terms of arid climate, size and stable democratic government, you'd be talking about the Cape Verde Islands, which is composed of mostly Catholics of European ancestry.

Get in on the real estate opportunity now.

As soon as gold rises to $5 million an ounce, it will become worth it to go rope an asteroid and bring it back.

According to the 1872 Mining Law I have the right to explore and exploit any mineral resources I find on Public Lands.
RIIIGHT; just try it.
The State, USFS, BLM, EPA, and all the rest of the alphabet soup agencies will swoop in and close you down/confiscate your find so fast you will think you were hit by a mudslide.
Then they declare the land you found it on; a national preserve, state park, or ecologically sensitive area.
Keeps you and other prospectors out forever, and the GODDAMN GOVERNMENT exploits your find.

And just wait until you meet the ‘government’ on Ceres ... they will not only exploit anything you find - illegal as that is - but exploit you as well ...

The total weight of all the moon rocks is less the 100 lbs.

I beg to differ:

During the six Apollo landing missions, 2,415 samples weighing 380.96 kilograms (839.87 lb) were collected.

I stand corrected. Less than a 1000 lbs. Now, is my point any less valid?
