University of Maryland President Quotes Wrong U.S. Motto in Email to Students
Accuracy in Academia ^ | December 12, 2015 | Don Irvine

In an email this week to students, University of Maryland President Wallace Loh, outlining the reasons behind his request to the Board of Regents to rename the school's football stadium, due to the racist past of a previous president for which the stadium is named, managed to quote the wrong official motto of the United States:

"Our national motto engraved on our coins is E Pluribus Unum, one formed from many. The Founders of our Republic got it right. We are a diverse people, but we are united by common values and ideals. We are of many different backgrounds but ultimately we are one. What holds us together is a commitment to core values that transcend our differences. They are the moral glue that binds our pluralistic society. They are the values of UMCP today."

Considering that "In God we Trust" has been the official national motto since 1956, it's hard to figure out how Loh committed such an atrocious mistake, except to say that the official motto wouldn't have fit his narrative as he caves to the left and practices revisionist history.

Most people, thanks to the media and socialists, probably think the US motto is (The New Colossus) ‘give us your tired, your poor’.

Did some research and found that, in addition to appearing on the obverse (back) side of the One Dollar bill, it has been engraved on our coinage for a while:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E_pluribus_unum

Furthermore, according to the link, while it was:

“Never codified by law, E Pluribus Unum was considered a de facto motto of the United States until 1956 when the United States Congress passed an act (H. J. Resolution 396), adopting “In God we trust” as the official motto.

So, while the college president mistakenly called E Pluribus Unum the national motto, author of the critical post is also omitting an essential bit of information as E Pluribus Unum was unofficially one of the mottos of the United States from its appearance on the Great Seal of the United States in 1782 until officially superseded in 1956.

FYI: “reverse” is the back side.

OBVERSE is the front.

I have always known EPU to be on our coinage. I am a coin collector.

And yes, the posting is a bit disingenuous.

Oooh, a shiny 2005-D! They’re usually pretty grungy by the time they get back East.
