University of Maryland President Quotes Wrong U.S. Motto in Email to Students
Accuracy in Academia ^ | December 12, 2015 | Don Irvine

In an email this week to students, University of Maryland President Wallace Loh, outlining the reasons behind his request to the Board of Regents to rename the school's football stadium, due to the racist past of a previous president for which the stadium is named, managed to quote the wrong official motto of the United States:

"Our national motto engraved on our coins is E Pluribus Unum, one formed from many. The Founders of our Republic got it right. We are a diverse people, but we are united by common values and ideals. We are of many different backgrounds but ultimately we are one. What holds us together is a commitment to core values that transcend our differences. They are the moral glue that binds our pluralistic society. They are the values of UMCP today."

Considering that "In God we Trust" has been the official national motto since 1956, it's hard to figure out how Loh committed such an atrocious mistake, except to say that the official motto wouldn't have fit his narrative as he caves to the left and practices revisionist history.

At least he got “republic” right and did not call the country a democracy.

Seeing how he is not actually from the US, it is understandable how he got this wrong. Yet it also showcases why he shouldn’t be lecturing us on common American values.

This is the exalted Constitutional Professor! A true genius.

Jesus, My Latin is better and I took one course twenty five years ago in Catholic High School.

Notice he didn’t call it a Constitutional Republic. He doesn’t like that Constitutional restraint thing.

E Pluribus Unum is one of the US mottos... the original one, in fact. It was not to my knowledge ever engraved on our coins, but has been and still is printed on our paper bills as part of the image of our national seal.

He failed both history and Latin on this one.

Consider it a miracle he at least said it was a republic. That almost never happens these days with public speakers.

A message to my Alma Mater:

Shame on you Dr. Loh. Erasing history is a way to ensure we repeat it.

You’re making UMD a laughingstock.

I’m also doubtful the founders were thinking of multiculturalism when they chose E pluribus unum for the seal... it is more likely they were thinking along the lines of a bunch of states forming one union.

The motto E pluribus unum alludes to the union between the states and federal government, as symbolized by the shield on the eagle's breast. The thirteen stripes "represent the several states all joined in one solid compact entire, supporting a Chief, which unites the whole & represents Congress."

E Pluribus Unum is on all of our coins. You just have to look for it.

It’s a legitimate mistake. He never uses currency - he just charges everything on his university credit card.

But it is a national motto, it is on our coins. It means from many, one. It is a reference to the many states that came together to form the United States. Its meaning is the opposite of diversity. We are one, period.

People say it means from many peoples, we are one. That’s fine because the whole point is the “one” part. We are one people. or at least we should be.
