Catholics shouldn’t support Trump’s ban on Muslims, bishop says

ROME — The threat of terrorism must be confronted sensibly and not by restrictions based on religion, which ultimately threaten religious freedom and incite more violence, said Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore, chairman of the US bishops’ Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty.

“As citizens and as believers, Christians and Catholics in the United States cannot possibly countenance” denying people entry into the country due solely to religious affiliation, he told Catholic News Service.

Lori was in Rome for a Dec. 10-12 international conference on Christian persecution in the world, held at the Pontifical Urbanian University.

While the continuing threat of terrorist acts in the West by Islamic State has caused security concerns, restricting religious liberty in countries like the United States, he said, could lead to policies that make matters worse.

The archbishop was asked about the increasing climate of fear in the wake of terrorist attacks, as reflected, for example, in recent remarks by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who called “for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on” and better understand possible threats. Such proposals, the archbishop said, have raised “great religious freedom alarms.”

Lori said that although there are growing security concerns and a fear of terrorism, denying entry into a country based solely on religious affiliation may only worsen the situation.

“I think those things have to be addressed in sensible ways,” he said. To address growing security threats, the archbishop stressed that governments must do so in “ways that do not, in fact, make this situation worse by inciting more violence.”

The bishops also never acknowledge that immigrants vote 80% pro-abortion. But then, the bishops have always hated the Republicans for opposing abortion.

Catholi and other religious “charities” make 100’s of millions from government grants in “resettling” immigrants. They are Judas..sold their souls. May they soon experience Righteous Justice.

I disagree. trump attacks Sen. Cruz as a maniac who “can’t get things done” while proposing something that would be dead on arrival at Congress. On the other hand, Sen. Cruz’ proposal would have some chance of passing. Stupid.

I wonder what this guy is going to think when 100 “Syrian Refugees” storm the Vatican, slaughter everyone in sight and destroy every single Christian relic kept safe there for centuries in a single afternoon.

“Catholic charities are the main recipients of ME refugees and illegals.”

Why you ask? Because it’s a big revenue stream for the church. Actually, most all the “churches.” They’re in the G-d business!

The issue is not about Muslims and preventing them from entering the US.

It is about the US government’s inability to protect its citizens from terrorists and death.

Our government has been corrupted by political correctness, incompetence and out right corruption. It is not only the present evil in the system, but the lack of good people to do things right and serve the best interests of the USA. We see it in the Executive, Congress, SC, The Veterans Admin, healthcare, the post office, etc, etc.

I am appalled that the voters continue to accept the same old people Clinton, Bush, McCain, etc.that don’t solve problems. I am appalled that H Clinton is responsible for the Benghazi problem and the treasonous use of her email and is still considered a viable candidate.

Trump may not say it the right way, but he is pushing their political correctness buttons. Trump may not be the best qualified candidate, but he challenging the issues and not the petty things that the media reports on like his hair.

Yes he is and he’s the one the liberal catholic clergy and religious wanted when Pope Benedict was elected. They hated Pope Benedict (the media and liberals hated him too). They hated JPII, too because he was traditional and conservative.

I think the media and liberals twist a lot of what Pope Francis says to their benefit but he really is leftist in many ways. The ‘world” was in an uproar when Pope Benedict said/repeated “Pope Benedict spoke about a discussion, a dialogue, “carried on - perhaps in 1391 in the winter barracks near Ankara - by the erudite Byzantine emperor Manuel II Paleologus” on the subject of Islam, the threat of which, in the form of the Ottoman Empire, was forcefully before him.

It is recorded that the Emperor, whom Pope Benedict described as “an educated Persian on the subject of Christianity and Islam,” asked, “Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.”

“The emperor, after having expressed himself so forcefully, goes on to explain in detail the reasons why spreading the faith through violence is something unreasonable. Violence is incompatible with the nature of God and the nature of the soul,” Pope Benedict said.

How can this be happening in a “globalized” world? What has happened to our “global village”? Hasn’t modernity, with all its comforts and distractions, friendly, western secular Coca Cola imperialism, succeeded in civilizing everyone and taming the whole world?

He quoted Paleologus: “God…is not pleased by blood - and not acting reasonably (σὺν λόγω) is contrary to God’s nature. Faith is born of the soul, not the body. Whoever would lead someone to faith needs the ability to speak well and to reason properly, without violence and threats... To convince a reasonable soul, one does not need a strong arm, or weapons of any kind, or any other means of threatening a person with death...”

“Given the images burning like acid into our minds now, how mild, how utterly calm and reasonable do the words now seem. And how plainly wicked the demands that he retract and apologize because of the “offence” they had caused Muslims: how feigned and deceitful, how self-serving the manufactured “outrage”.”

“In the face of this terrifying modern resurgence of the ancient threat, of such gross and unnatural barbarities, it is getting harder for western intellectual liberals to continue echoing the old mantras. The hard truth must be faced eventually, even by the most determined; not everyone in the world thinks the same way we do, holds the same values, has the same goals. Not every culture is of equal value. Not all men are equally “right” in what they believe.

And if the message of the photos and videos were not getting through our thick western skulls, we have today a direct warning from the leader of the ancient Christian community that has been decimated by ISIS. The Chaldean Catholic Church traces its heritage to St. Thomas, the doubting Apostle of Christ. A few days ago, we all saw the headline saying that, for the first time in 1600 years, Mass was not being said in the ancient Christian town of Mosul because all the Christians, all the Chaldean Catholics, had been either killed, expelled or kidnapped, to be sold later into chattel slavery.

Speaking from his exile in the dubious and perhaps temporary safety of the northern Iraqi town of Erbil, the head of this lost and grieving community, Archbishop Amel Nona, the Chaldean Catholic Archeparch of Mosul, told us quite bluntly, and without the niceties required by Pope Benedict’s civilized academic audience, that the time for indulging our comfortable liberal fantasies is over.

“Our sufferings today are the prelude of those that you, Europeans and Western Christians, will also suffer in the near future,” said the archbishop in an interview with Corriere della Sera. “I lost my diocese. The physical setting of my apostolate has been occupied by Islamic radicals who want us converted or dead. But my community is still alive.

“Please, try to understand us. Your liberal and democratic principles are worth nothing here. You must consider again our reality in the Middle East, because you are welcoming in your countries an ever growing number of Muslims.”

He warns us, “Also, you are in danger. You must take strong and courageous decisions, even at the cost of contradicting your principles.”

“The archbishop continues: “You think all men are equal, but that is not true: Islam does not say that all men are equal. Your values are not their values. If you do not understand this soon enough, you will become the victims of the enemy you have welcomed in your home.”

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that each country has a right to sovereignty, and to regulate immigration. It also states that we have a responsibility to wisely steward the earth’s resources, but there’s none of this climate change nonsense in there.

Since what the Archbishop is discussing here is not doctrinal in nature, Catholics are free to disagree with his opinion.

BTW, the CCC goes along with the just war theory.

Lori used to be a Bishop up in Connecticut. From what I can recall he has seemed pretty faithful; I’d say he’s a moderate rather than an out and out lib. Unfortunately, the media knows how to use the clergy to advance the lib agenda.

seems to be the tack Hussein advocates taking.

Mohammedanism is a totalitarianuism system of government hiding under a very thin coating of religious practices which have very poor theological basis. No matter what the flavor of its religious doctrines. It is still and always will be totalitarianism, spread by raw terroristic methods.

It has no place in promoting the welfare of a government of the people, by the people, and for the people, lest it perish from the earth. It is the duty of those who are still living to deny the access of such government forms, like Mohammedanism, Hinduism, Naziism, and so forth that arraign themselves against the principle over which our civil war was fought, that they not have died in vain.

We must deny access of Mohammedanism and Hinduism tou our country, not as religion, but as representing systems whose intent is to destroy ours.

This from the same people whose "pope" stupidly kissed the "holy" koran. (Someone on FR, who has it, please post that infamous picture)

As soon as the Vatican City State opens THEIR "borders"; throws open THEIR gates; tears down the massive wall surrounding THEIR enclave; disarms and abandons all of the security forces, and invites the hordes of blood-thirsty, hate filled, Christian and Jewish butchering murderers into the Vatican City to live their with THEM and THEIR supposed "pope", then maybe we will take your idiotic, "Kumbaya" blather "under advisement". Hell will freeze over before any of the above ever takes place.

Until then: Shut your hypocritical mouth, mind your own business and stay out of American personel and National security affairs because it is none of your business PERIOD!

I’m Catholic and support the Church’s stance on social and moral issues like abortion and marriage. I do not support the Church’s liberal stance on open borders. Never have, never will, and I’m not obligated too.

Heretic Cupich came out a few days ago and said faggots who are shacking up should be allowed to receive communion and said communion should not be denied to anyone if they have “had a good talk with the Lord and their conscience tells them it’s fine”. Of course he sided Francis as his inspiration.
