makeshift is in my mind made from stuff laying around.

a good pipe bomb is fabricated from stuff purchased at a hardware store. the san bernadino hand grenades were made from new galvanized elbows and plugs and were thus not makeshift.

The careful attention to design makes them not makeshift I found this first crack on Bing

Black powder and smokeless to a lesser extent is pressure sensitive. One grain of black powder in the threads might be enough to detonate it.
