This is a Brilliant Move by Donald Trump
Red State ^ | Erik Erickson

Posted on 12/07/2015 8:16:38 PM PST by VinL

Donald Trump just trumped all the Republican candidates for President.

The day after the mom jeans wearing squat to pee President came out to assure us that tolerance, gun control, and climate change would save us from ISIS, Donald Trump demanded we bar any muslims from entering this country and bar any American citizen who is muslim from re-entering the United States.

Set aside the merits of what amounts to at least, in part, an unconstitutional position.

This is actually brilliant politics for the here and now. Immediately, every other Republican candidate except Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) 100% rushed out to attack Donald Trump. He’s unhinged, hateful, etc. And the responses all amounted to "we must let muslims enter our country," which sounds a whole lot like "we must allow all Mexicans in our country," which everyone knows is blatantly untrue on both counts.

We do not have to do it, but the other candidates, unable to nuance their spittle, went all in with "no religious tests" and "yes we must do this because it is who we are."

So, to put it another way, the day after the President failed to reassure a scared public following the second worst terrorist attack since 9/11 on domestic soil, Donald Trump not only got himself to the right of all the other candidates, but also got every single one of them save for Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) 100% to align themselves with Barack Obama.

Hate Donald Trump all you want, be offended by his proposal all you want, but it is really brilliant politics for Trump right now in the Republican primary and the reactions from the other candidates prove it. All the people attacking Trump on his immigration proposals now attacking him on this have done themselves no favors within the primary process.

Have none of these people read Art of the Deal? This is an opening, bombastic salvo to set the terms of negotiations and the other candidates except Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) 100% just decided to negotiation in Barack Obama’s position. And it comes at a time some polls are suggesting Trump is starting to fade in places like Iowa.

Here’s another reason trumps move was brilliant that I haven’t seen stated yet. The next terror hit in the U.S. by a jihad import puts him in the white house by default. 0 has to tell his JV team to sit on the bench, at least until the election. (Not that they won’t try something anyway), to avoid looking like a total fool.

And another thing: isn’t trump merely echoing the same thing over 30 governors were saying about a week ago?

Last but not least: many will recall I predicted one of the ways they may go after trump. Is to blame a mass-casualty incident on his campaign. Trumps new position now makes that less plausible.

Two of those items are central to Trump 2016 campaign:

(1) “I play to people’s fantasies,” he writes. “People may not always think big themselves, but they can still get very excited by those who do. That’s why a little hyperbole never hurts. People want to believe that something is the biggest and the greatest and the most spectacular.”

This defines the massive crowds we've seen come out for him. My cousin went to the Alabama stadium event, and said many of the people were poor or a paycheck away, but LOVED Trump's success and believed he could bring the nation that success.

(2) “Deliver the goods.” “You can’t con people, at least not for long,” Trump writes. “You can create excitement, you can do wonderful promotion and get all kinds of press, and you can throw in a little hyperbole. But if you can’t deliver the goods, people will eventually catch on.”

That is the quandry he may be facing soon. Building up visions of "greatness"...how do you deliver? Will his fans tire of his words by February? Perhaps he has to be elected to "deliver the goods." If he then fails, he will have built up such massive expectations that he will have no chance of a 2nd term.

IFF you identify Islam as a completely different, competing political, economic, and social system, not just a religion, then you have a compelling argument.

Until somebody actually comes out and says that, it’s going to be treated like religious bias.

I wish everyone would quit calling Islam a religion.

OK, how about 'lifestyle choice'?

It’s pretty interesting how some of you political savants suddenly think a guy with a high-90s record of conservatism is REALLY Barry-lite and the guy that has a whole bunch of questionable and outright liberalism is the way/truth and light.

Is Trump right on this? Absolutely. 100%. That said, if you people can’t recognize a negotiation tactic he will back off from when the timing is right, and to his advantage, there really is no hope for you. Two steps forward, one step back. Net gain +1. I swear some people can’t see the obvious when it hits them in the face.

Brilliant!

Puts immense pressure on Muslims to police their own.

We have a No Fly List time for them to created theirs.

Every attack close - 6 months no visas.

Trump did not say that. he said that any American citizen, who goes to join ISIS or any other terrorist organization, should be barred from ever again returning to the U.S. - IOW, you go off to fight with Islamic terrorists, you forfeit your citizenship. Got it?

——and bar any American citizen who is muslim from re-entering the United States.——

.....stuck in never, never land, a citizen without a country...

Is there a problem here?

It’s creepy...but I like it. I feel sorry for the dog. It looks like he’s got Alzheimer’s. Maybe it’s the result of ObamaCare at the local Vet’s.

Erikson is awfully apologetic toward Trump suddenly. It’s fun. Wonder how gutfeld will handle his own brand of trump loathing whe the Donald starts really moving in for the long haul

Cruz did remark against Trump’s proposal. He said “it wasn’t his plan” (meaning he wasn’t advocating anything like Trump proposed).

Do we not already know (in spades) who it is that is deadly serious about national security? We have prayed for these things, and for the rare one who can win on them, against all odds, all the way to the White House.

Really?

“Cruz’s BIG problem and yes, it IS a problem for those who aren’t rabid Cruz supporters, is that he speaks in lawyerese.”

We normally associate ‘lawyerese’ with all things NOT conservative so yes, you ‘hinted’ at it. Might wanna get checked for Alzheimers. Your memory is going. Whats next? Bringing up his wife’s job?

And you even got a dig in at Cruz supporters. Bonus.
