FBI Director James Comey is the pivotal figure in the 2016 presidential race that no one is talking about.
Comey, a Republican appointed by President Obama who enjoys a stellar reputation on both sides of the aisle, is investigating Hillary Clintonâs use of a private email server as secretary of State.
Clinton is the overwhelming favorite to win the Democratic presidential nomination next year and is expected to be a tough candidate for any Republican to face in 2016.
Yet the controversy surrounding her private email account remains an Achillesâ heel.
The GOP-created House Benghazi Committee flopped in October when Clinton testified for 11 hours. That hearing failed to produce anything newsworthy about her use of a private server and attracted criticism from liberals and conservatives alike.
Its failure makes it clear that the FBI will have the final say on whether Clinton did anything wrong or illegal. And whatever the verdict is, both parties will have to accept it because Comey is, in many ways, untouchable.
The 54-year-old FBI chief, confirmed by the Senate to a 10-year term in a 93-1 vote this summer, is known for his independence and aggressive prosecutions.
The grandson of a police officer in Yonkers, N.Y., he has repeatedly stressed his nonpartisan approach.

Correct.
The National Security infrastructure wants this one. Badly.
If DOJ declines to prosecute, expect a flood of leaks exposing them.
A veritable tsunami.
I doubt he will do the right thing either. He doesn't want 1,000 IRS audits.
Or can he?
Exactly right, the DoJ has the right not to prosecute.
The Bush DoJ did not indict GOPe-meister Rove over either the federal prosecutor firings or the Valerie Plame outing.
We have to stay realistic on this one; Hillary will not be held to account.
Comey may be overflowing with personal integrity, but virtually anyone can be compromised with a threat or two to family members. As such, Comey will know better than to screw with the Clintons. Through the thinnest of pretexts and the finest of technicalities, the FBI will determine the investigation has reached a terminal point and the findings are inconclusive as to wrongdoing or fault.
We’ll be told that while she bore responsibility for the secure transmittal of information within her office, the sheer volume of the email traffic resulting from the plethora of unfolding events in a turbulent world made proper safeguarding an impossibility.
The bone they’ll throw to the masses is “the administration has been admonished in no uncertain terms that all its employees must re-acquaint themselves with all applicable guidance pertaining to communications security.”
With 900+ Classified emails on her home-brew server, he can’t just let her off scott-free.
Or can he?
When someone reminds him of what a shame it’d be should anything happen to his family, he most assuredly can.
Or they'll "unearth" a past "indiscretion" on Comey's part.
So many conspiracy theories on one thread! Better than late night talk to radio.
Better known by some as the Department of Injustice.
The US government has gotten so corrupt that nowadays I don't know if they are talking about the USA or Latin America.
Let’s honest he is the director of the FBI. I’m sure he knows where some of Barry skeletons are buried. It’s easy to say he’ll be blackmailed but it’s not as if he’s powerless. I doubt the whole agency has been compromised.
Doesn’t matter if the whole agency is compromised... all this administration and/or the Clintons need is to compromise a key player. Like I said... threats to family members can do much to that end.
I remember the late 1990s when pundits and conservatives were absolutely certain they had Bill Clinton dead to rights on the Lewinsky matter. Yes, the House went through the process of "impeaching" him, but it only served to make him more popular.
More along the lines of the Soviet Union.
I think if I were the director of the FBI and one of my family members were threatened the whole world would hear about it. He’s not some lowly desk jockey with no power.
And finally, even if she is indicted, she’ll get a presidential pardon and Obongo goes out the door.
Sadly, you are so right.
Anyone else would already be in prison for life.
