Mom could go to jail for letting her son play outside alone

That's what happened to Sonya Hendren when she let her 4-year-old son, Tomahawk, play on their gated Sacramento, California, apartment complex playground by himself. She felt her son could handle playing unsupervised 120 feet from her apartment's front door, but her neighbor disagreed. According to local news outlet CBS8, the neighbor, Sonja Horrell, reported Hendren to Child Protective Services, and Hendren was arrested for felony child neglect and endangerment.

Back around 1968 in South Jersey,I walked to school about 5 blocks, walked home for lunch, walked back to school after 30 minutes and then home again at the end of the day. We (the guys)carried jack knives to school without a gasp from the teacher or anyone else. At recess in Autumn when the big green acorns were falling, we would carve whistles and make believe pipes with our jack knives. The Horror!!

I walked or bike (or twice took my Honda 100) to school. Once I took my snowmobile. I went to a school less then 1750 feet from me. I either walked through the woods or jumped the fence at my friend’s house (until his dad put a gate in) or walked down my street turned left and walked into school.

What would happen if you named your kid Colt 45?

Take it to trial.

First ask the prosecutor, then ask the judge:

“When you were 4 years old did your parents ever let you play outside alone?”

“When did I lose that freedom?”

I recall I had to wait until I was 5 years old to ride my bike to the center of town 5 miles away on the main road. At 4, I could’t go past the elementary school 2 1/2 miles away on my ike by myself. Oh yeah, no helmet. The HORROR!

These modern day rules suck.

120 feet is not the same thing as making a 4 year old run to the corner store for cigs (common when I was a kid).

Child abductions are down - not up. The kid is probably safer on a playground then in his own home if his family life is chaotic.

Kids need to learn to manage themselves during play. They need to solve their own disputes, console themselves when they fall down or get minor injuries, and make little decisions about whether something is worth the risk.

You don’t want a 16 teen year old to suddenly confront this stuff after being bubble-wrapped for years.

She should be jailed for naming her kid “Tomahawk”.

The names they invent these days, it’s like they all try to out do each other with the weirdest, most attention getting garbage.

I don't give a frig what you or anyone else says about it. 4-5 years old is too young to let play unsupervised alone outdoors or go walking the neighborhood.

That is certainly one very "scared frigger" opinion.

The event occurred inside a gated community, and 120 feet is less than the size of most yards in my middle income neighborhood. Look out of your window, you can see a squirrel at 120 feet.

The average mom could run that distance in 5-6 seconds.

Do you think I care about who or what you give a frig with or about? What's a frig to you? Good or bad?

You could use a supervised walk outdoors.

In Junior High we would grab our guns and walk out of town to the country to hunt rabbits ans pheasants. Can you imagine the response now walking through town with a black evil .22 lever action assault weapon. Much less walking back through town carrying small dead animals.

When 7 yrs old I was chewed royally for driving a tractor into to see Grandpa.Didn’t understand that at the time as I raked hay etc on the same tractor.

In middle school, we would hunt pheasant on our way home from school. We had to leave our shotguns with the principal during the school day, but we walked right into school with them, and walked right out of school after all the busses had left with them. Fourth graders weren't allowed to do that, we had to be 5th or 6th grade.

She ought to do time just for naming the kid "Tomahawk".

Inbred redneck here named his new baby girl after his pickup "Chevi Cheyenne"

The intensive supervision demands are often a reason why people don’t want to have more than one or two kids.

You are obviously an angry, confrontational sort of person. To create strife with somebody on an internet posting just because their view when it comes to children is to err on the better safe than sorry side. Hmm didn’t realize that makes somebody a horrible person. To be honest with you I was not an overprotective mom. I gave my child a lot of freedom because my own parents were very strict and I wanted her to be a carefree and happy kid. Now that I’m a grandma I have a different worldview. And the world IS different.

Now you can go take your hostility elsewhere. I have no need for it. There are more amusing ways I can spend my time. Bye.

What’s with the demeaning sarcasm from some of you? You don’t know who a person is or what kind of loss they might have experienced to inform their current views. Have you ever or do you know anyone whose lost a child and how a moment or two in time can rip them from you forever? Easy to be flippant or rude when a one’s a faceless nobody behind a keyboard. YES I THINK YOUNG CHILDREN SHOULD BE PROTECTED FROM HARM. Those of you that feel the need to berate a person for that are either assuming something more than was stated, or must have deeper issues.
