EPA boosts amount of ethanol in gasoline supply

The Obama administration is boosting the amount of corn-based ethanol and other renewable fuels in the U.S. gasoline supply despite sustained opposition by an unusual alliance of oil companies, environmentalists and some GOP presidential candidates.

The Environmental Protection Agency on Monday issued a final rule designed to increase production of ethanol to be blended with gasoline through 2016, a decision that could reverberate in Iowa's crucial presidential caucuses.

The agency said it will require more than 18 billion gallons of renewable fuels in 2016, most of it ethanol. The amount is less than was set in a 2007 renewable fuels law, but is more than was proposed by the EPA in May. The agency said that the demand for gasoline has risen since May, increasing the amount of renewable fuels that can be blended in. ...

Somebody is profiting. That’s the only explanation.

This is one way to make us stop driving. This will do wonders for our cars as well as kill our mowers, tillers, string trimmers and motorcycles.

there was a report out just recently stating ethanol did nothing to cut down on greenhouse gases or to conserve fuel and was ifnact not good for small engines

No explanation is too far fetched for me on this.

It actually increases greenhouse gases, because ethanol is less efficient because you have to fill more often.

You know something is very, very wrong when the government forces you to waste food and use it as fuel.

“was ifnact not good for small engines”

Since they mandated it in Florida I have had to buy a new string trimmer every year .

My chipper/shredder died in less that a year too.(not replacing that one)

Since they mandated it in Florida I have had to buy a new string trimmer every year .

Three things:

1. Use only premium gas in small engines.

2. Use non-ethanol if you can find it.

3. There is a product called STA-BIL which prevents deterioration of gasoline in storage. Put a triple, that's right, triple dose in the premium gas you buy for the string trimmer. Put it in the can before you pump the gas in.

Your small engines will last like a mother-in-law's curse.

I can get ethanol free gasoline in Idaho. The 15% ethanol blend will destroy my motorcycle engines. That pretty much limit how far I'm going to be able to ride the bikes.

That crap destroys engines. A waste of land and water resources. Requires more energy input to create a gallon of ethanol than a gallon of straight gasoline. And the only reason ethanol is even marketable is because of the heavy fed gov subsidies - otherwise it would be a total loss for the producers.

I use SeaFoam to scavenge the water from my fuel in Idaho. Ethanol contaminated fuel attracts water, ices fuel lines and creates a clogging gel inside conventional carburetors. StaBil is a good call for Winter storage. I also keep fuel tanks as full as possible to limit the amount of surface area exposed to "air" where moisture can be wicked from the air.

Thanks for the tip on the STA-BIL :)
We try not to store any gas anymore and just buy enough at a time to run the tractor and trimmer etc when we need it .

I only use Shell’s best gas too as my truck runs terrible on anything else .
