Stone Mountain monument at center of racial tension over Confederate tributes

Names and flags have been removed from statehouses and street signs across the US, but at the stone-etched Georgia monument, no one is able to claim victory

Exactly a century ago this holiday weekend, more than a dozen men climbed to the top of a mountain outside Atlanta, pulled on white hoods and lit a 16ft, kerosene-soaked wooden cross. It marked the rebirth of Ku Klux Klan, and Stone Mountain became the Klan’s spiritual home.

My suggestion to solve the problem people have with Memorials, plaques, flags etc.: Line those people and send them on a one way trip to Africa. They will see no signs there.

I will never be offended by history. If you are, too bad, you can’t change the actual history. Those who do, to fit their agenda, are liars and should be condemned not given tenure.

It has become “offensive” (to me) seeing what has become of TV. The blacks are not 50% so, to be fair, we should only see about 14% representation in ads. Unlikely situations shown are even more offending.
Too bad for me. I stopped watching US programs and am happy viewing BBC or other British mysteries.

It was made to honor men of character, albeit in a losing cause. it was partially funded by a US half dollar coin in I believe ,the 1920’s. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone_Mountain_Memorial_half_dollar

If the South had prevailed would there be such a monument to Union generals?

"If the South had prevailed would there be such a monument to Union generals?"

If Union descendants wanted it, and did it with a sense of genuine honor, very likely so.

Why was the Stone Mountain monument ever made?

So dumb asses could marvel at it and ask stupid questions.

The South never could, never intended to over throw the USA. So your question is as stupid as it gets.

commencement on June 18, 1923, of the work of carving on Stone Mountain, in the State of Georgia, a monument to the valor of the soldiers of the South, which was the inspiration of their sons and daughters and grandsons and granddaughters in the Spanish-American and World Wars, and in memory of Warren G. Harding, President of the United States of America, in whose administration the work was begun ...

So TWO Republican presidents were honoring the (democratic) South. And I guarantee they didn't mean for slavery.

I actually tend to believe this. The Confederate States wanted to be their own private entity. They were poorly set up to defend themselves, however, and even the bible (which they were big on in some ways) warns about being wise in the face of battle resource issues. Fight the fights God has armed you to fight today. Larger fights may need to wait until tomorrow. Nobility per se never kept anybody alive. The North and South both had bad pride problems.

Anyhow, arguably we are all Southerners and all Northerners now, in different ways. It was bad for the US to split, and bad for it to fight over it in the way it did. We are both rednecks and yankees.

If yo ever read history , letters between Davis and his congress you would know the facts. THE SOUTH NEVER COULD, NEVER WANTED TO DESTROY the USA. The truth is the USA(North) was not in a life or death struggle, it was Mr. Lincoln's optional war.

Its “destruction” of the USA consisted of walking off on its own with a part of it.

It’s easy to understand how the North viewed it as treason.

Revisionist propaganda. The USA never ceased to exist. Smaller yes but continuing to expand westward, even during the war. You are spreading the big lies that have been taught for over a century. What utter BS.

Essentially boiled down to, in the end between Davis and Lincoln, “my pride can’t stand your pride.”

This story is as old as the bible. It’s nothing new.

You show yourself to be wallowing in the lies by recasting rather than refuting.

The South would be much better off as an independent country. The opposite is not true.

I have no affinity for the over reaching Federal Government the started in the years during and after the Civil War.

If you steal my Cadillac, does it make you not a thief because I still bought a Rolls Royce afterwards?
