N.C. high school students start food pantry to keep classmates from going hungry

WASHINGTON, N.C. (WNCT) — One high school student in Beaufort County, N.C. is committed to making sure its students are taken care of. Students at Washington High School started a food pantry to make sure none of their classmates go home hungry.

What started out as a student government project is now a full time resource to students.

Senior Erin Lewis says, “We wanted to focus on those that need it, but they don’t want to tell us that they need it.”

Lewis along with other classmates and their supervisor decided to start a food pantry. It offers students non-perishable goods as many times as they need it with no questions asked. There are no advertisements or flyers for the resource because it’s anonymous.

“We don’t want the students to be embarrassed or the family to feel like they’ve done something wrong,” guidance counselor Jennifer Beach said.

Beach says students find out about the pantry through word of mouth.

“Those who were involved in it to start with, will let other students know, hey this is something we’ve got up and running we helped create it and you can see your counselor for help,” Beach said.

Project supervisor Laura Thompson says helping one another is what the Pam Pack is all about.

“It’s the idea that we’re not just here to teach you the material that you need to know to pass a test,” Thompson said. “We’re here to educate you for life. Part of that is nourishing the whole student, mind and body, and when we do both of those things we know students will have great outcomes.”

Dozens of students currently use the food pantry. The goal is to expand it and add perishable items. Washington High School also has sanitation items, school supplies and clothes available to its students.

North Carolina is a toilet for Illegals. Who are these hungry people? Here in PA the poor are fat.

When I read the headline, I figured the food bank was to make up for Michelle’s lunch menu.

North Carolina isn’t particularly prosperous, outside of the urban areas.

Every week in my part of the country, western Wisconsin, viewers are deluged by the local tv stations with stories of students and other citizens setting up special food drives for the hungry and starving people in the area.

I invite people to visit my area some time and try to see how many hungry and starving people they can find. You might come to the conclusion that there aren't any....especially after walking through a few of the area Walmarts.

I hope it’s halal food.

Or, a lot of rice, beans and tortillas.

***************

Washington NC is 5.5% Hispanic, 47.2% white and 45.2% black.
Not sure who the hungry are. Maybe a mixture of all.

As I always tell those lie-berals who drone on and on about income inequality and the gap between the top and bottom %...

that is a comparison of apples to oranges. Of course in a relatively free society there is going to be a difference between the top performers and most fortunate and those who do not apply themselves or on the dirty end of the stick of chance.

Try comparing the “poor” of America to the “poor” in other parts of the world. That is where you will see an even greater “inequality.”

The “poor” of America are the 1%’ers compared to the poor of the rest of the world.

There are two lines:

On one Sign says FREE STUFF (as long as it lasts)

On the second line the sign says STUFF YOU HAVE TO WORK FOR (unlimited)

Which line is longer?

How do you move people from the first line to the second line? Serious question, tell me what you think.

This is total BS. We give welfare to everyone, that’s why so many recipients are fat as hogs.

How can students leave school hungry with all the "free" lunch (and breakfast and dinner and ...) programs available?
More liberal "victims" that somehow can't take care of themselves.

Really? I call bull chit on this. With all the taxes I pay and all the programs we pay for people are hungry because they can’t buy enough food? Bull. Just bull.

All night and all morning I have heard radio spots about food pantries and the guy in the car ahead of you, on the elevator, at school who are hungry. Really? Why?

I’m in my home county this week and struck by the number of give away agencies here. Those not working, and that is a lot of people, are working for the state giving away money.

I paid $5 in sales tax on two items last night. 10%. That is a lot in my book. It is a whole lot on top of the 7% state income tax and 38.5% federal tax and the 15% or more in payroll taxes. Let’s see 10% + 7% + 38.5% + 15% = 70.5%. I think I need to keep what is left to feed and care for my family as long as I can.

People I see around here that have not and are able bodied have not because they work not, have ambition not, are lazy yes. Their homes are junk yards, they are unkempt in person and demeanor. They have no pride or honor at all. You don’t have to be a slob because you are poor. Even the poor here in this country are rich by world standards. When I see the “poor” at the same restaurant where I eat something is out of whack.

No, I’ll not be giving any more than I have already given.

It’s only a matter of time before the government (at some level) comes down on these kids for violating some sort of law or regulation.

It’s a nice gesture, but I recommend they stock it with only foods people will eat if they are really hungry. Tuna, string beans, that sort of thing. If they fill it with comfort food, it’ll just be taken by anyone in the mood for it.

Another kind thing would be to teach civics. Oh, I forgot, they aren’t taught civics themselves.

I’m slap out of kind for people who don’t need it and especially for people who don’t earn it and expect it.
