Why Ted Cruz Probably Won’t Win
National Review ^ | 11/25/2015 | HENRY OLSEN

Posted on 11/25/2015 12:15:34 PM PST by BlackFemaleArmyColonel

Ted Cruz is now the flavor of the week. He has risen dramatically in polls, both nationally and in key states like Iowa, and now many pundits are saying he's the man to watch. Maybe so, but that vastly underestimates the challenge the very conservative senator from Texas still faces.

Cruz's rise is almost entirely due to his finally getting strong levels of support among the most angry and the most conservative elements of the party. If they were the party, it would be looking pretty good for Ted. But they are not, and therein lies Cruz's challenge. Call it the Cruz Ted bears.

The data are clear that Cruz is consolidating the party's Tea Party and very conservative factions. Three national polls in November break Republicans into three ideological categories, dividing conservatives into "very" and "somewhat" conservatives. They all show Cruz's support comes primarily from that first group. Quinnipiac has him with 27 percent among very conservatives, 7 percent among somewhat conservatives, and 6 percent among moderates. McClatchy/Marist has him at 21-8-5 among those three groups, and Public Policy Polling (PPP) has him at 29-10-1. The ideological right likes him a lot, while the center and the left of the Party are at best lukewarm towards him.

The same trends are evident if you break voters into Tea Party supporters and non-supporters. Quinnipiac has Cruz getting 30 percent of Tea Partiers compared with only 13 percent overall. PPP has him getting 26 percent of Tea Partiers but only 10 percent of those who say they are not.

Can you ever imagine, in your wildest dreams, any such analysis of the Democrats?

Imagine
-Hillary only get support of the strident angry feminist wing of the Democrat party which makes up only 33% of the Democrat voter base. She fairs poorly with center-right and male Democrats.

From the article:

"One should not write Ted Cruz’s obituary quite yet. A month is forever in politics, and we have many more forevers to go before the nomination is decided. But as my forthcoming book shows, these factional trends within the GOP are longstanding and deep. Cruz isn’t done for by a long shot, but the path he has chosen to take is simply the harder one to climb if he wants to reach the GOP’s summit." I am a Cruz supporter. But an article like this has to address the elephant in the room, Donald Trump.

The only reference to Trump in the article is the following, Simply put, moderate resistance to Cruz will eventually cause him heartaches and pain once they stop splitting their vote between five candidates (Bush, Rubio, Kasich, Christie, Trump) and start to unite around the survivor. Gee, it reminds of the old PBS children's TV game "One of these things doesn't belong here". I'm surprised that he didn't list Gilmore and Pataki ahead of Trump.

So . . . Trump's supporters evaporate. They'll go to Kasich, whose campaign is that he loves Trump and is more Christian because he commits his state to Fed Obamacare funding? Or maybe Rubio, who Trump is willing to provide delegates to, but only water. John Ellis Bush, according to Trump, wouldn't have enough energy to pick up his supporters if they required more energy than picking up the remote to acquire.

In 1980, the Establishment class had George the Elder, John Connolly, Howard Baker, John B. Anderson and Bob Dole to choose from. Even as candidates faded and there was only George the Elder, those who supported others gravitated to Reagan in good numbers.

Why is this? Because it isn't just about the issues spectrum. Those who support Donald Trump, liberal or moderate or conservative, are mostly supporting him on SOME of the issues, but they are mainly supporting the MAN.

If trump gets a lot, but not enough delegates to win the nomination, he might go Third Party, or he might use his bundle to help another candidate who isn't over the top either. Will that be John Ellis Bush? Or more likely Ted Cruz?

Henry Olsen? Who?

Did this idiot write this hogwash before or after Marco Rubio suggested going to war directly with Russia?

They said Cruz couldn’t win his Senate seat, too. He ran against the establishment machine in Texas and beat the establishment candidate in the primary and won in the general by 14%.

Never count Cruz out.

This article is simply tone deaf to the reality of the POTUS contest this year. Neither Ted Cruz or Marco Rubio can win the general election against Hillary Clinton....for the basic reason that neither one of them has enough overall votes to best Clinton!!!

The only candidate that can best Clinton is Donald Trump!!! Why? Simple & basic...he has the votes. Without a long winded rant...here’s the facts...Trump not only has Republican/Conservative voters solidly in his camp...but, he has Independents, Democrats, industrial union members, Hispanics and a smattering of Africa-Americans supporting him, etc.!!! He reaches way out of the Republican Establishment norm and attracts voters from all stripes of politics for basically the same reason....they love and believe in America!!!

This is fact, no matter what that moron, failure, Karl Rove utters!!! I would suggest that Ted Cruz shoot for the VP spot on the Trump ticket...because I believe that Trump would serve eight years & Cruz would serve the second eight....which is exactly what this country needs today As for Rubio & Jeb Bush.....they are wasting their time!!! They are both toast, no burnt toast...no matter how the fool that penned this article tries to lay it out!!!

Yes we must be defeatist. Eeyore has shown us the way. "Can't win, no use in trying! Only a establishment insider can get enough votes to lose to Hillary, why bother".

Yes, Only a McCain, Dole, Romney type can lose this thing. If only the tea party, Christians and conservatives would get behind Jeb, we would have a shot - just like McCain, Romney and Dole. And even if the moderate wins the nation still loses!

No more wimps! Liberty is a struggle that must be fought for in each generation! This our chance to see the tree of liberty refreshed by a most strident conflict or to see it wither to perish from the land. This is not the time for cowards and girly men, but the time for champions of liberty to go to war and fight to get our country back from the hands of the liberal oppressors. I want candidates that believe in liberty and will pledge their fortunes, their lives and their sacred honor for the cause of liberty. We are blessed that divine providence has given us such a patriot.

GO Cruz!

It would be more accurate to say Senator Cruz is getting support from the more intelligent and more aware members of the populace. The media uses the insult angry to describe informed citizens.

...yes, and a rabid supporter of someone else does their bidding by posting it as legitimate commentary. Maybe someone NOT among the more intelligent and aware......just maybe.....:)

I have posted ad nauseam to Cruz supporters that Ted Cruz is too conservative for the average GOP voter. The average GOP voter is middle of the road or slightly right of center. Much more into Trump territory. This is why in many national polls Cruz is still at 7%-8.5%.

Same goes for independents. Cruz is iffy in a general election. Trump is much more likely to win and win big in the general election.
