Protesters took to the streets in the wake of the release of dash cam footage showing police shooting a teen being shot by police, chanting "16 shots" for the number of times the officer allegedly shot him.
The dash cam video, released by police today a day ahead of a court-ordered deadline, shows officers confronting 17-year-old Laquan McDonald, who later died at a hospital, as he walked down the street on Oct. 20, 2014.
Chicago police officials said they were responding to a report of a person walking down the street with a knife and that McDonald refused to drop the knife when ordered.
The video shows puffs of smoke coming from the ground at some points, which court documents said were caused by bullets.
A prosecutor at Officer Jason Van Dyke's hearing said that McDonald did not step towards the officer, but the officer allegedly took at least one step towards him.
Van Dyke was charged with first degree murder and stripped of his pay and policing powers, police officials said today. He was held without bond.
"It's certainly everyone's right to make a judgment about it but I would just state that the judgment made by individuals who have viewed this tape from the comfort of their living room, on their sofa ... it's not the same," Van Dyke's lawyer, Dan Herbert said.

They shot this human down like he was a rabid dog. Didn’t these cops have any training in non-lethal methods of arrest?
To near Christmas ... Large screen TV’s, game systems and booze more in demand.
Cannot taze - too dangerous - he could be on you with that knife in a second.
Bean bag shotgun would have been a good choice. They probably don’t have them. Non-lethal shotgun rounds would have been great. Are they not issued?
Could have hit him with a car. But you would be sued into oblivion. Not allowed.
Since they were not being attacked they could have shot him in the legs. Potentially fatal but less likely so. At that range, even though he was bouncing around, one could easily make a few hits.
But, that isn’t how they are trained.
All that said - maybe they thought he had a handgun. Puts a completely different light on the incident.

the perp was 10 ft from the police with a knife and spun around at that time he was shot 16 times you can see the shots hitting the pavement when the kid is on the ground ive been here a long time but i cant believe people can honestly excuse this

A Glock 19 has a 15 round capacity and is a popular cop gun. 5.5 pound trigger, adrenaline dump—someone emptied a magazine or two LEOs shot about half their mags off.
I can see why the prosecutor sat on this video. That was an execution by trigger-happy cop(s). That kid, they should have used a taser.
Yeah yeah, I know—”The important thing is the cops made it home safely.”
We have a sheriff’s deputy assigned to patrol in my little town but we really don’t need him. He’s pretty laid back.
I don’t know ecept what what I see on the news.
21 feet with one person with a knife vs one person with a gun i might buy but one kid with a 3 inch pocketknife vs what 4 or 5 armed cops i dont think so
