During a town hall Thursday evening in Iowa, Donald Trump told voters the "only way" to make college more affordable for low-income students is "to start some governmental program."
The Republican presidential hopeful was asked what measures he would take, as president, to ensure middle-to-low income Americans are able to "pay their tuition [and] afford books while they're going to school."
"Well the only way you can do it is you have to start some governmental program and you have governmental programs right now," Trump told the moderator during the forum, which was held at a local community college.
"They go, and they work, and they take loans, and they're borrowed up, and they can't breathe, and they get through college and the worst thing is, they go through that whole process and they don't have any job," the billionaire said, referring to the majority of undergraduates enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities.
He continued, "You know the one program that the U.S. makes a whole lot of money with is student loans, and that's maybe the one program they shouldn't be making money with."
"So we're going to have to start a program," he said. "We're going to do something very big with loans because you have to get these people going. They really feel down and out."
Pressed on what he would do to solve the burgeoning student debt crisis, Trump said, "we're going to do refinancing for people who have loans who literally can't do anything."
"We're going to do refinancing and extensions," he said. Both of Trump's leading Democratic opponents, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, have proposed refinancing existing student loans.
Last June, Senate Republicans blocked a vote on legislation sponsored by Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., that would have...

The government program we need is a Divestiture Program that removes the Federal Government totally from education at all levels. Universities and colleges would rapidly become affordable as the grants and rules all go away and they have to compete for students who can’t get government loans and as they have to sell off their swimming pools and tennis courts and other non-educational luxuries. They would have to trim their bullshit courses and fire their non-producing professors as prospective students would have a much harder time getting loans on the private market for degrees that promise little economic return.
And I will not vote for Trump. Ever.
“Offering” knowledge: there are often not that many “takers”.
All of those ideas are part of the most effective program that can be implemented, that is-> Get the Federal government totally out of Education at all levels. No subsidies. No grants. No school lunch programs. No loans. No federal rules.
Sounds like you and me are not inclined to back Barbara’s boy
No commercials on OAN. Instead they provide historical facts about America and make tributes to all the branches of our US Military, and short weather updates one can view without help from a long winded weather person. There are two opinion shows, but all the other news programs are strictly national and foreign news.
A President can enforce laws covering immigration, illegal and legal, which provides more jobs for citizens.
A President can create an economic climate conducive to business growth, hence jobs.
A President can promote a reduction of regulations, i.e. EPA, which fosters new businesses and expansion of existing businesses.
Most of all, a President can foster a feeling of optimism within the country, making businesses more willing to grow and reach.
I agree. Which is why we advise our students to steer clear of ‘em. However, you need to political pressure at a much higher level to stop the nonsense.
Then define it and explain.
No I cannot vote for another Bush.
I suspect this will be the defining election in our lifetime.
Just watch a Ted Cruz speech. Any one you choose. They’re all good.
In the long term, I’m with you. If I’m selling sheepskins and nobody can afford them, I lower my asking price or go out of business, but if the King says he’ll give the money to the consumers to buy my sheepskins, I keep the price high.
A temporary fix by the King to keep the suckers who paid too much for a sheepskin before the unsubsidised price kicks in from going to the poorhouse might not be pure free market, but it’s going to keep the peasants happy.
Yep.
And then start immediately on removing our state governments from involvement in education.
I agree. Cruz is an excellent speaker, and the content is there, but I don’t know that his style connects with the proper audience.
Anyone who posts here is a political junkie. To win the nomination and beat Hillary/Sanders/Biden (the latter two only if Hillary gets a fitting for an orange jumpsuit) you need Joe Sixpack who thinks all politics and all politicians suck, and that’s all the politics he knows.
I don’t think Cruz can get there, certainly not without Trump. Just look at the way Trump and Cruz act towards each other, much nicer than the supporting camps at FR.
Also, I’m deeply concerned that SCOTUS would simply find him to be not a natural born citizen if he looks like he might win it. Farfetched? Just look at the Obamacare and homosexual marriage rulings. If Cruz is going to upset the applecart, it becomes a matter of power, not law. I don’t trust the men and women in black one little bit.
Also, I think Cruz hasn’t voted and acted with the same pure conservatism that rings in his speeches. I’m not as concerned about this as some, but it’s there. I’m pretty sure he acted out of expediency instead of philosophy there, and he now wants to be his own man.
That brings me to my last concern, he’s running on Super Pac fuel. Maybe he can’t be bought or leveraged, and Diogenes can finally put down his lamp, but history hasn’t been kind to that sort of optimism.
All that said, if Trump drops out I’ll vote Cruz and pray for a miracle.
Read this on Conservatism and see what you think. I did and I started giving a lot of thought and research

Typical lefty title, having nothing to do with what he said.
Sad that so many here don’t bother to actually read the article before jumping in to sound ignorant.
Trump. More cowbell.
So ... how do you explain, “”So we’re going to have to start a program,” he said. “We’re going to do something very big with loans because you have to get these people going. They really feel down and out.”
