I had a similar conversation with my lib sister a while ago. She felt that her life would be in greater danger if lawfully armed civilians engaged a murderous maniac in a shootout. I asked her if she was hoping that the unopposed kook killing everyone was going to run out of ammo before he got to her.
Not all French are like that. Back when I was an exchange student in France for a year, the family I lived with had a gun case right by the front door. It was the first thing you saw when you entered the house. Le grandpere would often grab a rifle when he left the house in the morning, and come back in the evening with a hare or something.
I tried to spell "grandfather" correctly in French, but the special letter changed into a string of random characters in the preview.
