The original comment was made on August 4, 1914 by British Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey. Vera Lynn’s song was an upbeat response. Grey was talking about all of Europe. Vera Lynn was singing about Nazi occupied Europe, and playing off Sir Edward’s remark from the previous war.

I had hoped never to see another war like WWII in my lifetime.

I guess I was being optimistic.
