Ted Cruz on Friday put a bit of distance between himself and arguably his closest ally in the presidential race: Donald Trump.
Kicking off a two-day swing through Iowa, the U.S. senator from Texas was asked about Trump's apparent openness Thursday to a national registry of American Muslims in the wake of the recent Paris terrorist attacks.
"I'm a big fan of Donald Trump's, but not a fan of government registries of American citizens," Cruz told reporters before a town hall at Briar Cliff University. The "First Amendment protects religious liberty."
Asked Thursday by NBC News if he wanted to monitor Muslims in America through a database, Trump replied he would "certainly implement that." The suggestion has drawn comparisons to Nazi Germany and has sparked bipartisan criticism.
Cruz has cultivated a chummy relationship with the billionaire, declining to directly criticize him on a host of issues. He refused to go further Friday when asked again about Trump's idea, reiterating his belief that reporters just want to see the two duke it out.
Cruz was joined at the town hall by U.S. Rep. Steve King of Iowa, who endorsed the senator Monday. Speaking with reporters, King also expressed some opposition to Trump's idea of a Muslim registry, saying he did not know how it would work in practice.

Great response. Doesn't speculate on what Trump said or meant, simply states his beliefs. In follow-up questioning Cruz let's reporters know he sees through their attempts to get him to trash another candidate something Cruz previously said he wouldn't do.

I’m saying it because of what the reporter said. I know what Trump said. He wasn’t talking about registering anyone. The reporter twisted it. The ones that support her Heiness are sneaky bastards.

I think he did well too but there are certainly FReepers who want to see Trump and Cruz in a match-up and not just the press. Disappointing to say the least. The MSM still has power, don’t they.

I totally agree Islam is not a religion it is a criminal ideological murderous cult.
I support Cruz but on this he is dead wrong, the authors of the constitution would not have included islam as a religion unfortunately they thought enough of common sense, reason and logic that it went without saying that cults especially those dedicated under the threat of death to forced submission demanding absolute authority over the entire human race are not religions.
The press is going to try to divide and conquer. We can’t let them!
The Federal Government has most all of that information via Census and income tax records. Military used to put your religious preference on the dog tags which is also entered into their permanent military records.
I agree, and that’s why I said Cruz has to be careful and just say, “I didn’t hear it,” or, “here is my policy. I’m not commenting on what Trump or Carson or someone else says”
There is already of sort database tracking of Obama taking in 250,000 per year since 2009.

Problem here is that Trump never said anything of the sort. Quite clear the supposed “reporter” was answered on a multi-faceted level by Trump (the main point of which was his wall and the database of known terror organization). The reporter gave a “so your admin would activate that” “That” not being specified and Trump said “yes”... referring to his wall and that we cannot go forward the same way as we have before and were attacked (as in 9/11). Not a Trump supporter- but Cruz should know better than this.

Yeah, those rules called the “Constitution”. Cruz seems to know a lot about those rules and regulations. Hey, why don’t we just throw that out the window, and implement “Common Sense”. Please spare me from the Knuckle Dragger Brigade.
What I can’t understand is how Americans and Europeans, knowing about Sharia Law and treatment of women, can continue to support Islam as a Religion, having “Religious” rights. Enough has been exposed and talked about since 9/11 and enough assassinations world wide made by these Islamists, to have finally penetrated the thinking of even the people with the thickest skulls!
The lefties at TX Trib are all commenting as if Trump actually said such a thing. Even the link they provide of supposed video shows no such thing.
