Donald Trump unleashes raging 12-tweet barrage, threatens lawsuit at 'irrelevant' rival

Politico reported earlier in the evening that a pro-Kasich super PAC was planning to unload $2.5 million or more to take down Trump, the Republican front-runner, in New Hampshire.

This prompted a dozen-tweet barrage by Trump against Kasich, ripping the PAC's attack as "pathetic" and calling the governor a "dud" over the report, among many other things.

*snip*

The super PAC, New Day for America, published a letter from The Trump Organization's lawyer warning that Trump would promptly seek "legal action" against the committee if its ads lied about Trump.

"It has come to my attention that you plan on producing and disseminating certain radio, television, and newspaper advertisements directly and personally attacking my client," Trump's lawyer, Alan Garten, wrote in the letter, which was also addressed to the Kasich campaign.

"Please be advised that in the event your ads contain any false, misleading, defamatory or otherwise tortious statements or representations concerning Mr. Trump's business or his brand, we will not hesitate to seek immediate legal action," it continued.

The letter concluded: "Please be guided accordingly."

The letter was similar in nature to a September cease-in-desist letter The Trump Organization sent to a conservative group, the Club for Growth, that ran attack ads against Trump in Iowa. Some eyebrows were raised because the letter was sent from Trump's corporation rather than from his campaign.

At one time I liked the Club for Growth. But then at some point during the Reign of George II, they sold out and became a subsidiary of the GOP Establishment and the Chamber of Commerce. I don’t like them.

I am satisfied with the letter from Trump’s lawyers.

I’m tired of your concern troll routine, so don’t bother.

Trump can’t seriously be worried about Kasich as a rival, although Kasich still seems to consider himself one.

I think this is fair warning. Kasich shouldn’t be allowed to take Trump down by libel.

Trump is just playing the lawyer card preemptively to try and bully other candidates so they won't go after him.

So they won't tell lies about him, you mean -- how is that "bullying"? Do we want a commander-in-chief who waits to be attacked before warning other nations what will happen if they attack? Warning against libel does not stifle any reasonable competition. The other candidates have to make their case affirmatively, as Cruz is doing.

The Republicans are waging a civil war within the Party when they should at this point appear united in principle, with different ways to achieve that, to the electorate. What is the purpose of a Republican opposition party if they act just like the Democrat Marxist socialists in power?

NO one is standing in anyone’s way....Trump is running his campaign with his supporters and the rest of the candidates are running their campaigns....

Having lived in the East for 17 years prior than coming back to my home State of Utah, I found the people there are very outspoken, say it like it is and to someone coming from Utah, Colorado and then Pennsylvania, I had to adjust...

My boyfriend came down with cancer while I was in PA and made many trips to Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital, all around the 9/11 time...people there are a different type of people, they are fighters, doesn't matter what level of business your on there, they are fighters...

I see that in Trump, as I followed him from the time I lived in PA. He is a strong person, as his business have shown him to be, he is a fighter and he wins...people are amazed at him...

Not everyone likes everyone, that's life, there are people I don't like as there are people that you don't like, we go on and do our things...

I'm a Trump supporter because I don't want Hillary, and wow did I learn a lot about her while I was living in the East, a lot more than what I knew from Arkansas, the White House, as New York Senator and S. of S. and now while she's campaigning...wow I really don't want that back in the White House...so that's one of the reasons I'm backing Trump...that and I want to be safe, I want to see America back on top in the World like She used to be....

GO TRUMP GO!!!

The Cruz supporters think that Trump is standing in his way to go higher in the polls.

Well based on polls he is the current front runner, so yeah.

Last time I looked, Carson was ahead of Cruz too - as was Rubio.

I saw that poll (NBC/Survey Monkey) with Cruz tied for second, kind of confirms my theory that he's starting to absorb Carson's support. I also saw a PPP poll this week that has Cruz in third with Carson dropping.

I also think it's very early and know that most voters don't tune in until January. As a Cruz supporter I don't feel threatened by Donald. Cruz is surging slow and steady, building up a ground game that is going to kick ass in the primaries and he's rocking the debates. I'd actually be concerned if he was the front runner at this point because it's very hard to keep that momentum going.

Trump is an AMERICAN first! What is going to heal America is what Trump is going to do...

On immigration, he wants illegals OUT; then build a wall and then come in LEGALLY...

On Jobs for Americans, he wants to bring back manufacturing jobs for Americans...

On Taxes, he has a plan, so the middle class, who have been ignored for years, he wants to use the rich people, like him, to take most of the taxes...

On health care, he wants to replace obumacare that is killing the people to have health care...something that is affordable for Americans...

On Social Security and Medicare, he wants to keep it and protect the elderly and people on Medicare....

On Veterans, he has a Vet plan out, the Vets and Wounded Warriors are treated worse than the third world countries...

On his campaign, he is self funding, he's not backed by super pacs, or lobbyists or anyone else, unlike our other candidates are...

On common core which is hurting our Children learning in schools, he wants to do away with it...what's wrong with the way most of us learned when going to school?

On 2nd Amendment, he is 100% for it, he knows if we go without guns, we'll end up like Paris...we need the 2nd Amendment to protect Americans and America...

So when you hear things from the GOPe, media and talking heads about how negative Trump is, just think what we hear about your candidate...they are doing the same to them....

GO TRUMP GO!!!

“So they won’t tell lies about him, you mean...”

Well when he makes these statements before any ads have come out, or in the other case, where ads just quoted his own words, then that is revealed to be a flimsy excuse.

“how is that “bullying”?”

He knows other candidates can’t afford to waste their campaign coffers defending against a costly lawsuit, so this may effectively cause them to just shut up instead of campaigning against him. I call that a bully tactic.

“Warning against libel does not stifle any reasonable competition.”

It certainly does when the “libel” aspect of the warning is transparently false. It’s nearly impossible to libel a public figure, firstly, and secondly, he’s not even citing any examples of libel that he is upset about. So the “libel” stuff is obviously a red herring.

The bully bullies some more. This bully is unworthy to be president of our constitutional republic.

But perhaps the people no longer want a republic.

The fact that they continue to run the ad and have been doing so for a couple of months now with no legal action from the Donald proves that Trump's claim is BS.

Speaking as a lawyer myself, that much is obvious from the letter itself. There are, generally, two kinds of libel/slander cease-and-desist letters: (i) letters addressing actual actionable libel, which will result in litigation, and (ii) letters that are intended to get the letter-writer's side of the story out into the public. I've written many letters of both varieties, and Trump's letter is clearly the latter kind.

CFG said negative things about Trump, Trump wanted to publicly battle with them and discredit the ads, so Trump had his lawyer write a blustery letter. Trump never intended to actually sue CFG.
