Threat of Paris-style attack bursts Germans' security bubble

BERLIN/MAINZ, Germany (Reuters) - After years of feeling insulated from militant Islamist threats, Germans are worrying that they too could be subject to attacks like those suffered last week in Paris.

The Paris attackers' attempts to suicide-bomb last Friday's Germany-France soccer match in the French capital pricked Germans' security bubble. The shock was compounded on Tuesday when authorities canceled a friendly match on home turf against the Netherlands, citing what they called a concrete security threat.

The twin threats struck at the heart of popular culture in Germany, soccer's World Cup holders, unnerving a people who felt for years that their opposition to the Iraq war and their low-key involvement in Afghanistan meant they would not be targeted.

"After the cancellation of the international match, our Germany is no longer our Germany," columnist Franz Josef Wagner wrote in mass-selling daily Bild's Thursday edition. "I'm not a hero, I'm worried."

Bild said several attackers planned to set off multiple explosives in the Hanover stadium on Tuesday.

I can still see the images of the hundreds of refugee greeters in Franfurt... A train station I spent time in. They were on video cheering and clapping, saying welcome. I left Germany in 1990 and while most Germans spoke great English, they spoke German to each other. I noticed all the greeters in Franfurt speaking English.. They were flaunting themselves and trying to shame us.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/france/12006713/paris-attacks-europe-migrant-crisis-terrorist-abdelhamid-abaaoud.html

“...................The Schengen border-free zone of European countries now finds itself in an existential crisis, with migrants and terrorists alike travelling with ease to every corner of Europe.

While the arguments over border controls rage on, the intelligence and security services are without one of their key weapons in the war on terror.

Mr Cazeneuve said on Thursday that it was only three days after the Paris attacks that “intelligence services of a country outside Europe indicated they had knowledge of [Abaaoud’s] presence in Greece”.

German federal police also admitted that Abaaoud had been checked going through Cologne Bonn airport on January 20, 2014, on his way to Istanbul, from where he would head for Syria. The French were not told, because he was not on any wanted lists in Germany....

I say it’s a foregone conclusion that Germany will suffer a terrorism attack and they’ll be able to link it back to Merkel letting them in.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/islamic-state/11998252/Paris-attacks-who-is-suspected-ringleader-Abdelhamid-Abaaoud.html

“........Intelligence failures appear to have allowed Abaaoud to act with impunity. He had travelled to Syria in 2013, then returned to Belgium via Greece. He was able to leave Belgium undetected and return to Syria, a round trip he made several other times, he says.

He was related to Ibrahim Abdeslam, one of the suicide bombers in Friday’s attack, and in 2010 spent time in jail with Abdeslam’s brother Salah, currently Europe’s most wanted man after going on the run after the attacks. They were childhood friends, having grown up in the same Molenbeek district of Brussels as several of the other suspects. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/france/11997410/Paris-attackers-linked-to-Belgian-suburb-where-the-authorities-have-lost-control.html

Abaaoud’s family had previously been told that he was dead, but it appears to have been an Isil ruse to throw police off his scent.......”

I'm concerned that if the Germans really get pasted hard, it may begin to rehabilitate the Nazis in German opinion, which would be a disaster for all the postwar diplomacy and alliance-building, all of which was predicated on a) keeping Germany disunited and b) keeping the pieces of Germans many bound to large alliances of several neighbors led by a superpower.

Not letting Germany square off again against either France or Russia was the goal, the key (in postwar diplomats' minds) to keeping another big war from starting in Europe.

Too, it will not help if Neonazism begins to become a force in German politics.

Arab terrorism could force Germany, re-Nazified or not, to become assertive again and upset the geopolitical applecart.

There can be no doubt that Merkel has made a ton of enemies in the German population.

If they get hit with a terrorist attack, and it seems likely to me, she’ll be the first one blamed and rightfully so.

Gosh! You mean if I let a stray wolf into my baby’s bedroom it might eat her?

But they are so furry and cuddly!

Fair enough, but I hope German politics is stacked deep enough with smart, pro-Western pols to replace her without encouraging the NeoNazis. I didn't realize what it meant that a guy was flying the old Imperial Riskflotte Ensign from 1918 ..... I gradually figured it out from news footage. I don't know whether the skinheads have an organized party to repair to, but if not, in a post-Merkel environment they might be able to create one.

12 years of Nazism in over 1000 years of history (if you start with Charlemagne) and that would be the only fallback?
