Islamic State says 'Schweppes bomb' used to bring down Russian plane

CAIRO | By Ahmed Aboulenein and Lin Noueihed

Islamic State's official magazine carried a photo on Wednesday of a Schweppes drink it said was used to make an improvised bomb that brought down a Russian airliner over Egypt's Sinai Peninsula last month, killing all 224 people on board.

The photo showed a can of Schweppes Gold soft drink and what appeared to be a detonator and switch on a blue background, three simple components that if genuine are likely to cause concern for airline safety officials worldwide.

"The divided Crusaders of the East and West thought themselves safe in their jets as they cowardly bombarded the Muslims of the Caliphate," the English language Dabiq magazine said in reference to Russia and the West. "And so revenge was exacted upon those who felt safe in the cockpits."

I saw a report that the can could not hold enough explosives with the other parts that had to be in it.

It looks to me as if the bottom end was cut out, the can filled, then the bottom was epoxied back on.

A hole in the center of the bottom is for the firing cap which is the middle object in the picture.

The object on the right seems to be a disguised trigger mechanism (creates voltage to trigger the firing cap).

So when does TSA outlaw Schweppes?
They should be outlawing people who belong to a certain ideology instead.

The twisted wires coming out of the top of the object on the right seem to be an antenna.

According to the pictures of the plane debris, and according to the media (Russian and US sources) the tail area of the plane received lots of damage from shrapnel (like ball bearings.

As you say, the can seems awfully small to contain enough explosives and shrapnel to do that.

Also, all indications are that the ‘bomb’ was in the cockpit, not anywhere near the tail.

The pieces of this puzzle don’t fit together very well.

What “other parts”?

Can holds the explosives,
Detonator (blasting cap), center,
Battery, switch, timer all in the wrap on the right.

What was the can IN, though, is the question.

In addition, enough C4 in a can will blow a hole in an airliner.

Interior cabin of plane is pressurized. A small explosive inside will blow apart and depressurize the plane. Plane disintegrates in the air. A small explosive doesn't need to be near the exterior wall.

What if there were more than one soda can bomb? They could be packed together in a box. I am just wondering.

Schweppes makes a lackluster ginger ale.

I’m glad a Canada Dry product wasn’t used.

Watch what a few ounces of Semtex can do to a pressurized 747:

Also, all indications are that the ‘bomb’ was in the cockpit, not anywhere near the tail.

Reports I've seen indicate the tail fell off, meaning the bomb was towards the rear. This is in contrast to Pan Am 103, where the bomb was in the forward cargo hold, and the explosion separated the cockpit from the rest of the wreckage.

In a country like Egypt, fairly crawling with Obama’s Muslim Brotherhood butt-buddies, that little bomb could be placed exactly where it needed to be to bring down an airliner and still make it look like an amateur act.

Where the devil did you come up with that? Can you even identify the cockpit in debris photos?

The pieces of this puzzle don’t fit together very well.

If you think the bomb was anywhere near the nose of the a/c, no wonder your pieces don't fit...

:-(
