A top Tennessee state lawmaker is suggesting that the National Guard “gather up” Syrian refugees who have been settled in the state.
“We need to activate the Tennessee National Guard and stop them from coming in to the state by whatever means we can,” Tennessee Rep. Glen Casada said in a phone interview with the Tennessean on Tuesday.
Casada, who is the chair of the state’s House Republican caucus, said the federal government has no authority to force states to accept refugees against their will.
“Tennessee is a sovereign state,” he said. “If the federal government is forsaking the obligation to protect our citizens, we need to act.”
“I’m not worried about what a bureaucrat in D.C. or an unelected judge thinks… We need to gather up [Syrian refugees] politely and take them back to the ICE center and say, ‘They’re not coming to Tennessee, they’re yours,’ ” he added.
So far, other lawmakers have not backed Casada’s plan to use the National Guard to send refugees to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
But Tennessee is one of at least 30 states whose governors have committed to opposing the White House’s plan to settle 10,000 Syrian refugees in the next fiscal year.
Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam (R) sent a letter to President Obama on Tuesday asking him to stop sending Syrian refugees to the state, pointing to the terrorist attack in France on Friday in which at least one assailant is suspected of entering the country posing as a migrant.
Obama stated today that he will veto any attempt to stop the flow of immigrants through the jihadist pipeline. We the people have no voice. None.
And still the House refuses to bring articles of impeachment while Obama threatens the lives of Americans. Just unbelievable.
Put those FEMA camps to use. They can stay there until Cruz becomes president.
States vs. Fed
What could possibly go wrong in 2016?
...We the people have no voice...
Congress should declare war on ISIS. They consider themselves a country, they levy taxes, coin money, and claim land...Obama has no say in a Congressional declaration of war. Label Syrians enemy combatants and ban them from here. And, if Obama refused to prosecute a declared war, he could be impeached.
Why, WHY can’t they go to Qatar, or Kuwait, or Yemen, they already speak Arabic, it’s much closer, and the adjustment would be minimal. Why don’t each kind take in their own kind.
In a Constitutional Republic, everyone’s voice is heard when it comes time to elect the officials to represent us. Those officials then speak for us until we speak up and vote them out of office so another person duly elected can represent us in the government. That is what a representative government is all about. We the people give our voice to an individual who represent our voice. Should they not represent us then it is our duty to make sure either they hear us and act accordingly or place our vote against them the next time we are able to choose who shall represent us.
If we have no voice it is because we are not electing those who represent us. If they are representing someone else who we are in disagreement with, then it is incumbent upon ourselves to take more of a participatory role and get the person in office who will represent our point of view.
There are exceptions to the natural order of this process and that has been enacted before and can be now and in the future. That is the removal of an elected official through various means.
If you believe your voice is not heard, then do something about it. Each person is responsible for conveying their message. This is called accountability. Enough people get together with the same voice and it will get heard. If you think that your voice will never get heard, then you are not speaking at all.
A post on a thread can get the ball rolling but there has to be motivation behind it so that voice becomes a thunderous roar. If a post is written and others do nothing then into the eternal night it will fall away to never be heard again.
Only when there is action behind the words do they get heard.
Slimes should be treated as such.
Can a President veto a Declaration of War? that would be something new from him.
Obama may try to shove these immigrants in these states over the objection of the Governors. He never listens to anyone, anyway. However, if the Republican governors truly don’t want these refugees, there is one sure fire fix: Cut welfare bennies to the bone. These ‘refugees’ are famous in Europe for moving to countries like Germany and Sweden with generous welfare benefits, even when they have been originally placed elsewhere.
Yeah, and then Obama federalizes the Guard— which is permitted under federal law since so much Guard training dollars come from the Pentagon— taking them away from state control. That suggestion is outdated by several decades.
“If you think that your voice will never get heard, then you are not speaking at all.”
BS. The politicians think they are above the people, not that they are the representatives that serve us.
The only option is guillotine.
“Yeah, and then Obama federalizes the Guardâ which is permitted under federal law since so much Guard training dollars come from the Pentagon.”
That’s not true. A president cannot federalize the state national guards without authorization from Congress. Even if the congress were to authorize that, the president doesn’t control the state militias. Governors do. And yes, 26 states have organized state militias.
The John Warner Defense Authorization Act of 2007 Pub.L. 109-364
Federal law was changed in section 1076 so that the Governor of a state is no longer the sole commander in chief of their state’s National Guard during emergencies within the state. The President of the United States will now be able to take total control of a state’s National Guard units without the governor’s consent. In a letter to Congress, all 50 governors opposed the increase in power of the President over the National Guard.
The question will be, does this constitute an “emergency” under the meaning of this law??
Section 1076 relates to Tricare, Frank.
Check out this link. It is the governors joint resolution to oppose the Warner Bill. I agree with them.

I still can’t find what you or the governors are referencing. Check it out yourself. The link to the 2006 National Defense Authorization Act is here:

Everything pertaining to sec. 1076 covers some aspect of TRICARE. Could it be that Warner’s proposed defense legislation was never passed?
I’ll dig a bit more.
Okay checked out the legislative history of the 2006 National Defense Authorization Act. Here it is:
LEGISLATIVE
HISTORYâH.R. 1815 (S. 1042) (S. 1043):
HOUSE REPORTS: Nos. 109â89 (Comm. on Armed Services) and 109â360 (Comm.
of Conference).
SENATE REPORTS: No. 109â69 accompaying S. 1042 (Comm. on Armed Services).
CONGRESSIONAL RECORD, Vol. 151 (2005):
May 25, considered and passed House.
Nov. 15, considered and passed Senate, amended, in lieu of S. 1042.
Dec. 18, House agreed to conference report.
Dec. 19, 21, Senate considered and agreed to conference report
Looking at H.R. 1815, there is nothing pertaining to federalizing the National Guard during certain emergencies and disasters in a Sec. 1076.
The legislative history shows a single amendment to S. 1042. There is a conference report on Dec. 18. I can’t find that; however, I still don’t see anything pertaining to the governors’ concern in the final legislation.
I’m miffed.
