UPDATE: The final language of the bill discussed below is slightly different than the Hudson bill in that it also requires the FBI Director to sign off on each individual refugee. However, the bill fails to stop the program and focuses on the wrong issue while giving Obama much-needed cover for his egregious plan. The House plans to vote on this bill Thursday and has no plans to defund the program. We can always count on Republicans to take a 90/10 winning national security issue and turn it into a shiny object. Instead of listening to their constituents and following the calls of 30 governors to shut down Islamic refugee resettlement, Republicans are about to pull the classic bait and switch: pass a phony standalone bill and decline to defund it in the budget bill.

All the procedures and steps Congress has been going through to raise he debt ceiling and fund the government can be confusing, but I thought bills had already passed to fund the government for two years?

So, the "power of the purse" has been surrendered for two years, meaning the Republicans in Congress have little real leverage to stop Obama on anything (which is just the way they wanted it). Is that correct?

The recently passed "two year budget" bill was simply an agreement to raise overall spending limits, and to "suspend" the debt limit (simply continuing to pretend that it doesn't exist), for the period (through the end of FY 2016 IIRC).

It doesn't appropriate or authorize any spending. Several weeks ago they passed another CR that continued gubmint spending up through December 11, 2015. In the model that is currently used (which no longer consists of actually working (12) bills through the committees and sub-committees to actual appropriate & authorize spending at some level of granularity), they will like come together to pass another "Omnibus" spending bill (that needs to stay within the limits of the recently passed "budget" act) for N period of time.

It is within this process that the House still has the Power of the Purse to use at its sole discretion. Only items that are included within the Omnibus spending bill can be legitimately funded by the federal gubmint. So, my removing all funding for this refugee resettlement program (or any of the other countless programs that should be ground to a halt!), they can effectively stop it (at least for the period of time covered under the bill).

I am no expert on any of this, just an informed citizen that also has a decent recall of my high school civics lessons.

But you are most likely 100% correct, the chance that they will actually use the Power of the Purse that they do still retain, is most likely slim to none.

You cannot speak with your congressman without the precise HB number. If you do so, RHINO congressman will state they are with you 100%, which may mean they support the show bill. Tell them what is the effective bill we support and call them on it if they hide behind the show bill. You MUST have the bill name/number. Would someone please provide this? Otherwise some caller may be fooled. The eGOP made a mistake. We are now paying attention. Be precisely informed when you call.

Name me anything that our elected officials have won and that was not won in the courts. I’m a news junkie and I can’t remember anything that We the People wanted done getting done in this current congress. Please offer up some examples and some hope:-)

What’s the big diff. when we’d have 20K+ radical wolves-in-sheeps-clothing in our midst too? It’s not like they will allow these ‘refugees’ into THEIR gated communities/private jets. The elites get paid regardless of the damage done/lives lost.

Pissing into the wind calling GOP reps. My Senator is The Turtle. I gave up writing/calling that traitor some time back.

Stock up people. The time is coming when PATRIOTS will be the only ones to defend themselves, their families and THEIR country.

I write to thank you.

Thank you for being compassionate about welcoming our Syrian refugees. They’ll be wonderful additions to our communities.

Their compelling interest in honesty and tolerance of others who disagree with their religion is truly remarkable. What would we do without them? What would they do without us?

For example, their treatment of women and children, even in the many boats on their ways to Europe, is the stuff of legend. Of course, their treatment of females as a whole and defense of any woman ‘at war’ with their own body parts is simply unparalleled. And the commitment to women’s education! The importance of these things cannot be overstated.

In sports, ever the sportsmen, their equal treatment of opposing teams is welcomed, indeed. Then again, their encouragement of practice for targets, head soccer, and head polo is well known. We can learn much from them.

Their attitudes toward cleanliness and personal hygiene, especially with their left hands, is one to aspire to. Right down to wearing comely materials and washing frequently, even their personal toilette on planes is well-renowned and understood.

But their graciousness in learning the art of meat cutting, as witnessed on the floor of the Paris concert hall, is something to wonder at. So fast! So effective!

So thank you for your permitting the federal government to place untold numbers of the Syrians in our neighborhoods. Don’t forget to let us know how your little girls and boys enjoy playing with them. We also hope, should you like animals, that your dogs like them so much that the dogs want to play in their yards, too, the way you want the Syrians to come in ours.

May you come to know the Syrian ‘refugee’ community so well that you can hold then dearly enough to within a hair taken from your head.
