AMA doesn't want you to see those Cialis ads

The American Medical Association on Tuesday called for a ban on consumer advertising for prescription drugs and medical devices, saying such marketing could be driving demand for unnecessary expensive treatments.

The Chicago-based association said it adopted a policy supporting an advertising ban and called for greater transparency in prescription drug prices and costs. The policy was adopted by physicians at an AMA meeting in Atlanta.

"Today's vote in support of an advertising ban reflects concerns among physicians about the negative impact of commercially driven promotions, and the role that marketing costs play in fueling escalating drug prices," Dr. Patrice A. Harris, the AMA's incoming chair, said in a statement.

Last year, drugmakers spent $4.5 billion on consumer advertising, a 30 percent jump from 2012, according to Kantar Media, a market research firm that specializes in media consumption.

I don't get the thing about TWO bathtubs...

Anyway, I have a feeling this is more about the extensive listing of side effects for drugs during the commercial....

Get rid of that dry, scaly skin! Talk to your doctor about Itsmoothsya!

May cause seizures, heart failure, loss of genitalia, in some patients arms and legs fell off, blindness may occur if you are on other medication. consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking Itsmoothsya, and cease taking Itsmoothsya if you experience signs of shortness of breath, swelling of the lips or airway, a rash or hives, which may herald an allergic reaction and seek immediate medical attention...

I'll scratch, Doc!!

I think all the warnings are bad for business.

I don't like consumer-targeted drug ads, but, it's not the government or the AMA’s right to suppress distribution of information. If the ads are false, and the drugs don't work, or if they don't tell you about major side effects, then that's false advertising. Otherwise, it's free speech, and if they can afford the ad, it's their business.

If we let politicians lie as they so often do on national television, then why should be restrict drug manufacturers from telling the truth about their products?

We are now living in the USSR. It's amazing to see, and my heart is heavy.

And I won’t miss the slut in the football jersey, either.

BTW, is rubbing your wrists together in the mirror supposed to be sexy?

“Having said that, unless they’re false, they should be voluntarily eliminated because of taste...not because of eeeeeevvvvvviiiiiillllll capitalism.”

Liberal MDs don’t want patients to know anything about drugs, how they work, side effects and the good things.

They want to rx generic drugs to be part of the Obama care with cookbook diagnosis and cheap drugs, which are often not as effective and as good for the patients.

Not all new drugs are better and some are definitely better for the patients.

Probably won’t happen and has far reaching implications but I would love to see end of all ads for any drugs, especially prescription drugs. How much might that save in costs?

My cardiologist, who's a senior faculty member at Harvard Medical School (and a longtime friend of mine),has told me that it drives him (and his collegues) up a wall when patients demand a particular medication that they saw on TV.He bemoans the time he wastes convincing those patients that while Medication X might be right for *some* people it's not right for *them*.

Good!

I hate those drug commercials and their endless list of potential side-effects.

There was a time, long ago, in a far away world, prescription drug advertisements were not allowed on TV.

I don't usually support the AMA on anything but on this issue I agree.

Inflated prescription drug prices are at the top of out of control US health-care costs not the cost of insurance/ACA/Obamacare.

As I've said before, the politicians have convinced folks that its the cost of insurance and not the cost of the health-care that is the problem, due to the very successful lobbying efforts of the industry

Costs of primary health-care need to go down and insurance costs will follow. The health-care industry (primarily drug companies) is a monopoly that uses the term competitive advertising as a platitude to simply increase the price of their product.

The toenail fungus topical treatment is a fraud! The stuff costs about $500. for a bottle that isn’t big enough to last the length of the “required” treatment period. You can go get a laser treatment for about half that amount and usually one treatment cures the problem. Like other drugs, the Jublia people should be made to tell the truth about the true cost of the treatment and the success of it, which is also less that that of the laser.

Damn what will TV be without feminine hygiene products and prescription drugs that you have to pester your doctor for after you convince yourself that you have the disease or affliction that requires the product?

Exactly. There are two bathtubs...both situated where several younger men who DO NOT need Cialis would have been needed to set them into place.

Usually on top of some mountain ridge, overlooking a scenic river valley.

Where there would logically be ZERO plumbing connections for said dual bathtubs.

That shouldn't be there where they are.

That wouldn't be there, except for the intervention of somebody who didn't need Cialis.

This message was brought to you by Milton Miteybad, who freely admits that he wouldn't be hauling two bathtubs up a mountain to a place where there are NO plumbing connections, because he knows the local zoning authorities would say, "Are you crazy? This is a national park! You can't put these bathtubs there! And besides...once you get the tubs in place...what are you going to hook them up to? The place ain't plumbed, pal! There are no water taps on top of our publicly-owned mountain, Ace. Forget it, dude."

I want this advertising BANNED. It makes watching TV SICKENING and I have little sympathy for drug companies to begin with.

The Internet is now here. People can do their own research to figure out what should work for them - and we can have our automobile commercials back, finally.
