Louisiana governor candidates John Bel Edwards and David Vitter clash in heated final debate

In a final statewide TV debate Monday (Nov. 16), Democrat John Bel Edwards and Republican David Vitter began making the closing arguments in a wild gubernatorial campaign that often took on an angry tone.

The two men came out swinging as the debate opened with a question about Syrian refugees; it ended with Vitter making a personal appeal to voters for forgiveness for his prostitution scandal and Edwards making the case that he's the best leader. In between, both men fumed at each other for a series of attacks that each said was a distortion of his record.

It was the last time the candidates had a chance to speak to a statewide audience before voters cast their ballots Saturday.

Vitter, who is trailing in the polls and is closing the campaign with the argument that he's the only true conservative, tried to paint the anti-abortion Edwards as an undercover abortion rights proponent. And he sought to tie Edwards to President Barack Obama -- a frequent tactic he's deployed throughout the runoff -- in his position on Syrian refugees.

"I have a consistent record of standing up to President Obama fighting for border security, fighting for national security," Vitter said during the debate, which was hosted by WVLA-TV at the Dunham School in Baton Rouge. "My opponent has staked out a very different position ..

Vitter needs to move on and mention the issues , instead he decides to close to ask for forgiveness. IMHO that is a mistake.

“Vitter needs to move on and mention the issues , instead he decides to close to ask for forgiveness. IMHO that is a mistake.”

I watched the debate last night. Edwards was extremely nasty, would not stop throwing it up to Vitter. The female moderator was doing all she could to help Edwards; she brought it up herself.

It remains to be seen if the voters in Louisiana are prissy enough to listen to Edwards.

Edwards initially came out for the Syrian migrants, if you can believe that. Then he changed, and when Vitter called him out on it, Edwards immediately alluded to the scandal. That is all he has.

Actually, KY and LA governorships have never to my knowledge been a reliable forecast for the presidential election the following year. Vitter is in deep trouble I think in part because he did not start active campaigning soon enough and acted earlier like he had a sure victory just waiting.

The other Republican candidate, Scott Angelle, who finished third has been silent: this is interpreted as pro-Democrat, for he is a recent former liberal Democrat too.

Yes, you are right: he’s already asked forgiveness many times; it’s not working to do so.

Long-time political axiom: "When you are apologizing you are losing."

One can never apologize enough (unless you're on the Left where an apology is never necessary because your intentions are always good).

“Long-time political axiom: “When you are apologizing you are losing.”

That is why Edwards mentioned the scandal over and over. He may have overplayed his hand.

RCP polling on this race is totally insane. As of the ened of Oct5ober and for the two polls preceeding that one (all LV), Vitter was up by strong double digits with the polls done by a Democratic Pollster PPP.

Since then three different polls have come out showing a swing towards Edwards of 34 points in just a couple of wks. Hell, even Daily Kos is skeptical and the history of these pollsters is anything but good as far as accuracy.

Detail here.

The “refugee thingy” may (should) put Vitter over the top. I sure hope so.

typical Dem. Use a scandal what they have no problem in doing themselves, fake an outrage, and then once in power they tow the party socialist line while the media reports how the country is turning left again.

KY 20 years out, a pretty damn good corollary...

Thanks, I just know it had little bearing in KY from 1979 to 1991. I wouldn’t put much stock into such governor’s elections here, but maybe you are right for 2016.

The problem is the masses made their decision c. October 24-27, and it’s bad for Vitter. Now the majority apparently will not vote at all.

I can’t stand Vitter but he is a hell of a lot better than that creep Edwards!

In Arkansas on the border with Louisiana and get news from Louisiana too. Lately about very 30 seconds there is an ad for one of them. All those ‘we are Republicans but are voting for Edwards’ is an obvious lie. One of them is an attorney I looked up and he is certainly anything but a ‘Republican’.

The last week Willie Robertson started doing an ad for Vitter so I figure that should drag him over the finish line.

What are you hearing?

Happened in 2004 before he was elected to office. He used a escort service.

He has rehabbed his political life, on of only a few that have and his family life as well.

Since this occurred before he was in office, not even the congress was able to pursue charges or violations.

While he’s not the best candidate in terms of a spotless past, (his past is being dredged up for obvious reasons)he appears to me to be a good man for the job.

If there is any Republican In Louisiana voting for Obamabot Democrat Vermin John Bel Edwards this Saturday for Governor, they need their heads examined!!! This guy Edwards want to fill Louisiana with Migrant Muslim Terrorists, those adored by Obama (The Obama beloved Muslim Brotherhood, allied with ISIS!!!)

Listen folks in Louisiana...ya need to get your present Govnor, Bobby Jindal to get his butt in gear and criss-cross the entire stste in support of David Vitter, and....you also ought to get every single Republican legislator to do exactly the same thing. Plus.......you should immediately contact every single Pubbie POTUS candidate to do radio or TV annoucements across the state in support of Vitter!!!

Why??? Because if David Vitter defeats this low life Democrat gutter trash Edwards, that loves Obama Muslim Terrorists, and Edwards want to place you, your kids, & all your families in servere harm’s way......then please do not complain when Edwards “Migrants” shoot up or blow up your town, like they have just done in Paris!!!

For goodness sake...how can any “sane” person in the state of Louisana even think about voting for this Obamabot “traitor”!!! SAD!!! The election, coming this Saturday has “national” political impact. If Vitter wins, the Democrats are most likely doomed to total defeat, come next November, 2016. Then we, the people will have our POTUS, our House & our Senate!!! This Saturday...”MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN”.....vote for David Vitter for Governor!!!
