Intensifying El Niño could have unprecedented impact

El Niño is already the strongest we’ve seen in more than 15 years, and it’s only getting stronger, according to a report released Monday from the U.N.’s World Meteorological Organization.

In fact, the weather pattern, which has already delivered extreme weather in parts of the world, is on track to be among the most powerful ever. It’s already been blamed for extreme weather events around the world, including major coral bleaching, an intense cyclone season, wildfires in Southeast Asia and drought conditions in parts of Africa, to name just a few.

For California, it means increased risk of heavy flooding and mudslides. Bill Patzert, a climatologist for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory told the L.A. Times that “El Niño is here. And it is huge,” adding that locals should expect “one storm after another like a conveyor belt.”

I live in Phoenix and it rained from late yesterday morning thru early this morning at my house.

And today highs in the 50’s, lows in the 30’s.

Definitely a change in weather pattern.

Well, actually, women and babies and the remote villages in the highlands of Papua are being hit quite hard. There has been scant rainfall here since late June ~~ although this is a rain forest ~~ and without rain, crops are crispy. Without a constant supply of fresh food, there are no storage facilities in these remote areas, people are starving and thirsty. Their weakened bodies also makes them more susceptible to diseases.

There has been some relief the last two weeks. Please pray for us; that there will be rain.

Disregard the Global Warming nonsense and look at the El Nino numbers...

El Nino is caused by Global Warming.

Whenever bad weather strikes anywhere in the world it is caused by Global Warming. Whenever good weather strikes anywhere in the world it is caused by Global Warming.

Basically, all weather is caused by Global Warming. It is a very flexible theory.

Here in Central Texas, I have always described our weather as a series of droughts separated by floods. This has been our weather pattern since long before there were any people here.

There was a Catholic priest at St. Helen’s, Fresno, CA who always started his sermons with, “Brethren, we are all going to die.” Didn’t believe it for a minute when I was 16, but at 75 it is suddenly gaining relevance.

Will do... have to be careful though, the last three times we prayed for rain it wouldn’t stop until all the ground was so saturated the pine trees here started falling over...

Definitely a change in weather pattern.

Yes! It's either going to be hotter, colder or more normal than usual.

Quite a few years ago, when the words “El Nino” were first being bandied about, there was a massive late fall snow storm in Kansas and Nebraska, just like often happens there.

Our local news chick stood out in a darkened parking lot about 700 miles from the storm and said...”The question that is on everyone’s lips”, then she looked directly into the TV camera with a terrified look on her face, “IS THIS EL NINO!”

I had to fight the urge to throw a boot through the screen.

When we were just gleams in our fathers’ eyes, before we were imbued with souls, we were nothing. Right?
Well, were our parents’ DNA waiting to be combined: All potential?
And souls were lined up, bottled in jars on shelves waiting to be poured into us ...

The waiting, that wasn’t too scary a time for me, and I’m going to suppose for you either.

Death? Same thing, just one is before life, the other after.
Your priest was playing his trump card right out the gate. My fire-and-brimstone preacher did the same thing.
Fear of death. It’s what salesmen call `the closer’.

Just curious, did your priest dwell on the torments of eternal damnation, how you would pray for a single drop of water on the tip of your scorched tongue, and so forth and so on?
Like Tertullian, my guy loved that stuff. In fact, that was one of the things preached a long time ago, that one of the special rewards for those in Heaven would be enjoying watching the suffering of the damned, the sight and sounds.

Like the Twilight Zone movie intro. with Dan Ackryoyd, (you know where he changes into some sort of monster?) for a nine year old this `damned for eternity’ sermon—now *that* was scary stuff!
Finally as far as you and I are concerned, we’re both heretics, at least in the eyes of our rabbis/priests/ministers. Okey dokey
Yeah, life is terminal and short. It’s a shame not to enjoy it.

Sorry to everyone else - But big El Nino’s like this mean a really warm winter - the last one this big I remember playing golf in December, when I’m usually under 3 feet of snow...

Bring it on!! once every 15 year break is an earned reprieve! We’ve had some brutal winters here in Wisco the last several years..

Nope.

Despite severe and frequent drought in recent years, the last thing parts of Texas need right now is more rain.

Record flooding in May, more last month, stock tanks and lakes full, primed for rampaging creeks and rivers again if the skies open. Haven’t yet even rebuilt all the fences destroyed by flood and tornado already this year.

Texas is a big place, and some of it always needs rain, but we’ve been overly blessed with moisture this year.

Unprecedented! Unprecedented I tell ya! Because there was never, ever a system like this ever before until we named it. Before then, weather behaved itself perfectly, and there was not globull warming.
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it! Wah-wah-wah!
