Cross on L.A. County Seal Goes to Judge
Courthouse News Service ^ | 11/16/2015 | Matt Reynolds

A federal judge, Christina Snyder, will decide whether a Latin cross on the Los Angeles County seal is a state endorsement of Christianity or just an accurate depiction of a building of historical significance.

Coates said in a trial brief that the cross had been at the San Gabriel Mission since it was built in the late 1700s. Aside from a 22-year period when the cross was removed for repairs after the Whittier earthquake in 1987, stolen and then restored, the cross has been a consistent feature of the mission.

But plaintiffs' attorney Linda Burrow, with Caldwell Leslie & Proctor, told Snyder in court that there is no doubt that county officials are endorsing Christianity and that inclusion of the cross had the effect of "advancing religion."

Orilly? Don't they endorse things like sodomy and abortion? Can't do that and be Christian. I'd say their actions show that they're actually persecuting Christianity (as you are), rather than endorsing it. So I think that means you can buzz off, you hamster totalitarian with the brain of a college freshman.

A federal judge named Christina is also a huge threat. If she rules against the cross, then her next step should be to change her name.

I guess Los Angeles will also have to change its name since it mentions angels. Can you imagine how that offends “some” people?

A federal judge named Christina is also a huge threat.

That is a very good analogy. Is she endorsing religion every time she signs her name?

Isn't it interesting the names of the plaintiffs are not mentioned.

Dude, it's so much worse than that! The official name of the city is La Ciudad de Nuestra Senora, Reina de Los Angeles. "The City of Our Lady, Queen of the Angels."

Catholic with bells on, in your face. Named after the Blessed Virgin. I wish we had some East Coast town names to match, but our history was wrong for that.

San Gabriel, San Pedro, San Fernando, and Santa Monica must go, as including the Spanish word for saint endorses religion too. Then we can move on to Santa Ana and San Clemente, San Onofre and San Diego, San Francisco....

Yeah, the city name has to change.

I recommend Los Diablos, to more accurately reflect the majority of its denizens.

I've seen both. I'm no Spanish expert, but I think "Reyna" is older-style. Spanish and French, and English too, have tended to replace "y" as a vowel with "i" over the centuries. I kind of prefer the y, but I was going by some online dictionary.

I've read that y and i are in some way the same letter. The French word for the letter y is i-Grecque, or "Greek i."
