If someone doesn’t plan on shooting regularly, there is a lot to be said for a J-frame revolver w/ good 38-special ammo. Add a good rubber grip, and there is a lot to be said for one loaded with 357.
The women I know would not hesitate to shoot to protect themselves or their kids. At close range - which makes the most sense for most self-defense scenarios (are you really in danger at 25 yards?) - point with your forearm and pull the trigger.
I’ve got a couple of J-frames that I carry (and practice) with 357 ammo - not lots, just 10 rounds a session of 357, rest light 38s. At the 10’ and under range, they are hard to beat. I’m thinking of buying a semi-auto for easier concealment...maybe the LC9s or Kahr 45. But I think semi-automatics are harder to get used to than a revolver.
My Rugar SP 101 (2.25") conceals better than my Springfield XD9 (3")
