Six things women should consider when purchasing a firearm for self-defense

No gun is a “point-and-shoot” gun.

Most women, by nature, are not fighters, and telling someone to just point and shoot is nonsense. For a woman to pull the trigger, when it could end a life, is an emotional and stressful experience. Even the thought of it makes most women shudder. Advice like this leaves her ill equipped and unprepared for what will be required in self-defense.

Finding something I like and will be able to use effectively is on my “to do” list!

Check with your local gun shops to see if the have a 'Range Day'. A number of our local gun shops pick a weekend at a gun range where, for a small fee to cover the range time and ammo, you can 'test drive' any handguns they've brought with them and possibly find one that will fit you hand and won't knock you backwards. My wife is Asian, so it took a little bit to find a small framed handgun with enough stopping power and yet won't knock her into the next county when she shoots it.

In theory: if your state isn`t a commie state and allows gunshows, and it has a waiver on background checks for non-FFL sales, then if you rented a table at one, (and kept the receipt) you probably would have 'sold off' that weapon, right?

Much better than ALL those guys who somehow keep losing them in 'boating accidents'. Lucky me, Ohio is just such a state, nice huh?

Recently obtained a S&W stirker fired M&P in 9. Got a couple extra “clips” with pinky rest. Nice piece.

This is my personal "Grab & Go" favorite. Fits easily into a pocket with no hammer to snag if you need to pull it. .38 Hollow points and you got a stopper. Only negative is 5 shots, but that can be 1-5 attackers with holes in them before having to reload...

all my girls have revolvers, but at least a couple have moved to 9mm compacts, just for the extra capacity...

The premise seems a bit off. This clown never met Mrs. Afterguard.

My youngest is a purse fanatic and yet, when I showed her the choices available, she agreed they were something she`d carry. The choices and styles are growing to cater to the growing and increasingly finicky market, wouldn`t surprise me if Coach starts making them. Thank goodness for good`ole supply and demand.

I disagree with her recommending a semi over a revolver for a woman. There is only one action involved in firing a revolver.....pull the trigger.

I would never recommend a revolver to anyone. Five or six shots, and you're done. The fight may or may not be over, but your participation in it is. When I pull out my Glock 23, I too only need to pull the trigger, after the threat has been identified and the target has been acquired. But I have 14 rounds to neutralize any threats and still have enough ammo remaining to deal with any other threats. And I have two spare magazines that I can swap out in less than a second. Try reloading a wheel gun in the middle of a fight. It ain't gonna happen.

All of the women I know who carry, carry in a purse.

That is the first mistake. A weapon should never be carried in a purse. Purses get stolen. It should always be on your person.

If someone doesn’t plan on shooting regularly, there is a lot to be said for a J-frame revolver w/ good 38-special ammo. Add a good rubber grip, and there is a lot to be said for one loaded with 357.

The women I know would not hesitate to shoot to protect themselves or their kids. At close range - which makes the most sense for most self-defense scenarios (are you really in danger at 25 yards?) - point with your forearm and pull the trigger.

I’ve got a couple of J-frames that I carry (and practice) with 357 ammo - not lots, just 10 rounds a session of 357, rest light 38s. At the 10’ and under range, they are hard to beat. I’m thinking of buying a semi-auto for easier concealment...maybe the LC9s or Kahr 45. But I think semi-automatics are harder to get used to than a revolver.

No woman carrying for self defense is getting into an extended gunfight. If she is really comfortable with a chambered round in a semi (which she should be) then OK. Otherwise, only a revolver. I carry a Ruger LCR 38 Special +P.

I have emailed/contacted stores of the brand name purse manufacturers (Coach, etc) about making some CCW purses but it has fallen on deaf ears. I have adapted my Coach purse to accommodate a holster inside my purse that I can easily access pistol when needed. So far, all purses made for specific CCW are unacceptable.

I carry a nice .40 S&W M&P Shield, my other is a Beretta Tomcat in .32ACP; no way I would hesitate to protect myself.

Start them young I say.

A CC is pointless if it is at home. 90% of the stuff women wear would not permit a CC on the person. So, they will leave it at home if it is not in the purse. Not ideal, but realistic.
