Edward Snowden and spread of encryption blamed after Paris terror attacks
The Daily Dot ^ | November 14, 2015 | By Patrick Howell O'Neill

As Paris reels from terror attacks that claimed at least 128 lives, fierce blame for the attack is being directed toward American whistleblower Edward Snowden and the spread of strong encryption catalyzed by his actions.

The latest deadly terror attack is bringing the "crypto wars" further toward the spotlight. The crypto wars refers to a decades-long political battle over the legality and popularity of encryption around the world.

In the years since Snowden revealed to the world the vast surveillance and spying done by Western governments, strong encryption has become an increasingly popular way for people to shield their Internet activity from prying eyes. Encryption is used by everyone from ecommerce websites to human rights activists to American soldiers to Islamist terrorists.

It's the latter group's adoption of strong encryption in particular that has attracted so much fiery rhetoric.

Fox News hosts Greg Gutfeld and Dana Perino, George W. Bush's former press secretary, took to Twitter to directly blame and even curse at Snowden.

In response to the Charlie Hebdo attacks that hit Paris in January of 2015, France adopted one of the most aggressive surveillance laws in the Western world. That was not enough to stop these attacks.

There is no sign of how the Friday attacks were coordinated and executed. It's also not clear who exactly carried out the deadly massacres but witness accounts and video feature screams of "Allah Akbar" and mentions of Syria.

On television in America, on-screen experts quickly began speculating that encryption, as well as more precise knowledge of the West's intelligence capabilities, could have played a role in the attacks.

There is no public information about the planning behind the attack, so any suggestion that Snowden or encryption are to blame is conjecture. The pointed speculation against Snowden attracted criticism as well.

Jihadis can not yet be encrypted.

Control your borders and eschew Islam with its Jihad, Sharia and Mad Mo' pronouncements.

Snowden caused my dog to get mange. Not only that, but my neighbor’s toaster keeps burning his toast now. And somebody is throwing Dunkin Donut coffee cups on the side of the road down at the corner. AND THERE’s NOT A DD AROUND FOR FIFTEEN MILES! Coincidence? I think not.

Also, F Snowden. F him to you know where and back. — Dana Perino (@DanaPerino)

Yeah, bimbo is about right. What kind of analysis is that statement. US citizens are pissed off that the NSA spies on us, NOT on the damned Muslims. We are finding out now that Germany apprehended a terrorist at the German/Austrian border last week. His car was full of explosives and hand grenades. The kicker, the GPS in the terrorist's care had a Paris address. Yet German/France/US’ NSA did NADA.

It’s the founding fathers’ fault, with their notions of liberty. If they had set up a nice police state we would all be safe!

They gotta blame somebody. Just pick someone. Anyone and the mob will believe it and spread it on further. The Twitter crowd will have it around the world in seconds. Don’t blame the governments of the world for not standing up to the muslim hord. No, let’s just take the terrorists in by the thousands. Give them free everything. No experience. No job abilities. Well, maybe run a Quickie Mart. But, you get the drift. They allow the muzzies to come over the borders also. The Mexican mafia is helping the terrorists to come in. You can bet that weapons, bombs, etc. have crossed over the southern borders. They have what they need to start hitting our malls. Christmas is coming. The malls and such will be packed for Christmas shopping. Prime targets.

Wait a second.
The NSA, et al. assured us that they dint do nuffin, then Snowden outed their peeking into our e-mail with their own blue dress ... and then they said that they were doing it for our own good, you know, to stop the bad guys from blowing us up and shooting us ... and stuff.

But after going ahead and continuing to peek over our shoulders without our permission and reading discouraging words, like these—because it was for our own good—they din’t stop the bad guys, and Snowden is the bad guy?
What are the French? Chopped liver?

D-uhh ... hey look! A squirrel.

Oh, so unless we become lemmings to the government we will continue to suffer from terrorism, I see.

Christmas is coming. The malls and such will be packed for Christmas shopping.

Then they can blame Donald Trump for saying Merry Christmas. l haven't been online all day, but someone is probably already blaming him for the Paris attacks.

Bovine excrement.

Back during the Green Revolution in Iran, it was known not to plan on cell phone communications being secure. This was well before Snowden’s revelations. Strike 1.

At least two of the terrorists were on the French radar. Their fault for not being more diligent, and no, encryption didn’t make this impossible. Not by a long shot. Strike 2.

Europe was the entity that decided to allow invaders from Syria into their land and didn’t bother to manage their Muslim population that was going and becoming increasingly radicalized. Strike 3.

Snowden had nothing to do with this but the establishment control freaks of Fox et. al. want to blame as much as they can on him anyway.

Yes, let’s cast blame everywhere, but on the Islamonazis. Instead of repairing our shoddy immigration policies and recognizing modern Islam for the hostile, alien ideology that it seems to be, let’s blame Edward Snowden . . . or right-wingers . . . or Islamophobia . . . or even George W. Bush!

Also, F Snowden. F him to you know where and back. -- Dana Perino (@DanaPerino) November 14, 2015

if the attack was aided through "whistleblowers" leaking what the NSA cannot penetrate, will that be part of the movie? -- GregGutfeld (@greggutfeld) November 14, 2015

Snowden's fault! I'm sure somebody will be along to blame George W. Bush at any moment. But don't you dare be "Islamophobic" or "xenophobic"!

Interesting that the guy who exposed the massive, ubiquitous digital spying is being blamed, rather than those who are engaged in massive, ubiquitous spying. Without the latter, strong encryption wouldn’t be necessary.

Moose limbs don’t need no stinkin encryption. Refugee Moose Limb A meets Refugee Moose Limb B at the local cell phone store where they both buy cheap prepaid phones. A calls B and says in his best English “Let’s meet for lunch at Mickie D’s”. They meet there and plan their next bombing verbally out of earshot of most people. You don’t need encryption for that.
