US Navy edges back to Subic Bay in Philippines – under new rules
Yahoo News ^ | November 12, 2015 | Ralph Jennings

When this Philippine coastal town rid itself two decades ago of a giant US naval base, it wanted to shake off a colonial past and reject the “ugly Americans.” Yet today the town is once again welcoming American military personnel and viewing the US as a vanguard against an increasingly pushy China. The US Navy began using the base in Subic Bay last year to deliver materiel and personnel for annual joint military exercises. Some 6,000 US personnel came to Subic in April, and are set to return for exercises in 2016 in agreement with Philippine authorities, according to a Western diplomat. US ships are using Subic Bay as a resupply port during routine calls, and two towering merchant marine ships flying American flags were docked here in late October.

I went to Subic several times as crew of a Destroyer. It just might be the worst place in Asia outside of the Vietnam war zone. Sailors mugged ON base. Going on liberty only in groups. It’s a horrible place. Eff ‘em.

USS Biddle (CG-34), also DLG-34, named for Captain Nicholas Biddle of the Continental Navy, was a Belknap-class guided missile cruiser of the United States Navy. Her call sign was "Hard Charger"

Thank you for your service.

“We need a presence there.”

Obviously we don’t, as for years now we haven’t.

We don’t need to garrison every nipa hut, goat pen, or barren expanse of sand in the world. The attempts to do so are part of our present decline.

No respectable people want to see their young women whored out to foreigners.

It’s really that simple. Solve that problem and the Naval Base won’t be a problem.

And the USN is crossing Sh!t River again in sizable numbers.

The most legendary of all port calls in the USN since before WWII.

"no one who wasn’t there would believe it."

I was there and I believe it. One could not invent a story that is implausible.

Ahh.... liberty in Olongapo during the ‘70’s..... no one who wasn’t there would believe it.

Ain't that the truth! I liked Subic City, Luvy's, Marilyn's Super Inn, etc. etc; some of the best times of my life I spent there!

Same here. They wanted us out so we should stay out. They can face the ChiComs themselves. Ungrateful people. They would still be under Imperial Japanese rule if it were not for the blood of our soldiers, Marines, sailors and airmen.

I've docked at Subic at least a dozen time, with two of them extended refit stays.

I have to say you are a minority of one.

"It’s really that simple"

That was always the issue.

10,000 prostitutes within 5 miles of the gate, with hundreds of now one's arriving each week on buses.

It's a wonder God didn't burn it to the ground. It was the most decadent town in the history of man.

I recall the same rumors in Vietnam. Supposedly formaldehyde was some sort of anti bursting agent. That is, when the beer was in some deep hot hold of a cargo ship, bouncing on the seas, the beer was less likely to explode.

I do know the beer in Vietnam had a totally different taste, so some sort of preservative was put in it.

I just posted a fifty year old photo.

The pool sharks at Saint Elmo’s Billiards in Norfolk had nicknames for everyone. Mine was Sailorboy.

Remember the training grounds in Vieques, Puerto Rico? They even got Al $harpton down there protesting, so they closed it...and the money dried up. Then there were complaints that we did what they asked...

The protesters wanted the target range gone. I think developers had their eyes on that island. With the range gone, there was no longer a reason to keep the Roosevelt Roads Naval station open, so it was shut down as well with Southern Command moved to Jacksonville. The corrupt local politicians wanted to convert it into an International Airport and tourist destination. They couldn’t deliver.
