The Wheels Are (Finally) Coming Off the Trump Campaign
The Fiscal Times ^ | 11/13 | Rob Garver

Posted on 11/13/2015 9:04:22 AM PST by TangledUpInBlue

It took longer than almost anybody expected, but on Thursday night, it looked as though the wheels were finally starting to come off Donald Trump’s run for the presidency. It’s too early to write his political obituary just yet – he’s shown remarkable resilience in the face of ridicule and disdain – but even Trump will have trouble recovering from a day in which he repeatedly compared his chief rival to a “child molester” and invited attendees at a campaign event to bring a knife up on stage and try to stab him.

Trump has been aggressively attacking retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, who has pulled even with him in national opinion polls of Republican primary voters. Last weekend, Trump’s attacks became more pointed, and he latched on to a line from Carson’s book, Gifted Hands, in which Carson described his childhood temper as “pathological.”

Trump should keep his hands clean and just let the MSM and Ben Carson, himself, take down Ben Carson.

I wish he would.

We/They have been saying something similar since the McCain “not a war hero” incident in July.

There is always a kernel of truth, and none of it sticks.

The other side gets away with a wide variety of extreme and goofy speech, but does not pay a price. It’s about time we shared that standard.

100% correct. And I’m a Trump/Cruz ticket advocate.

Trumps speech was really disheartening. Very convoluted. Uncomfortable is the best way I can describe it.

That's not exactly what I meant.

I couldn't let that stop me. (;> I'm annoyed at all these people who are acting as if Trump embarrassed them at a country club soiree. He owns the damn country club.

Trump is a salesman, huckster and a deal maker. He is not a conservative.

If he gets elected, I will feel sorry for the Freepers who were taken in by this con artist.

You could substitute Bush (any of them), Dole, McCain, Romney, and most of the other present candidates in as the subject of your first sentence and still have a true statement.

I never said that Trump’s speech was fantastic. I think that was a different poster. I agreed with the person who started the thread that said it was weird. I also said that I wish Trump would back off and let the MSM and Ben Carson, himself, take down Ben Carson. So, I guess that I agree with you, as well.

He may be the smartest and most articulate of all, but his base of support is very narrow.

I was more concerned about that a month ago than I am now. He has improved considerably, much more natural and warm onstage. I don't know what did it, but it is heartening to see him do better.

Cruz just needs some better media coaching.
(1) He uses his eyebrows a lot, which makes him look supercilious.
(2) He also tends to tilt his head back too much. See (1).
(3) And he should smile more. Especially when doing (1) and/or (2).
FDR’s grin and his joviality totally erased his class problem. A similar fix would work wonders for Cruz. Voila! Connection with the voters!

I agree 100% with your views on fighting communism and yes Trump has the best immigration plan and I like his views on China but I feel that Trump does not share my views on the fundamental principles of the constitution Nor do I feel the rest of those running for the nomination have those views as well.

I have posted this to every Trump FB and other site to which I have access. If you are also a supporter and can help, please do so.

PLEASE — if anyone with the Trump campaign is monitoring these sites — tell the candidate to back down the invective and ridicule.  It is really hurting the campaign and  causing some folks to rethink their support for one of the two men who can clear out the wreckage Obama is leaving behind!  PLEASE?!?!

The Donald needs to do what nearly every past candidate has done with that sort of factual info: Let other folks put it out there! I respect Trump’s honesty in doing so himself but it makes this otherwise good man seem petty and small to those who are not following these campaigns, candidates and issues as closely as we wonks are.

I'm right if I'm right, and if I'm wrong, then I'm still right.

Those are good suggestions. Simple calibrations. Perhaps you’ve done some voice coaching in the past. In addition, if I wasn’t paying attention, the nasal quality to Ted’s voice would throw me off. As it is though, I can deal with that feature because of the truth and power in what Ted speaks about.

tell the candidate to back down the invective and ridicule

Trump doesn't have the self-control that this prescription of yours requires.

A certain demographic of Carson supporters are easily misled. That same easily misled demographic supported Santorum. That certain demographic followed Huckabee four years prior.

I mostly agree.

GW Bush is a good man. He just let the liberals run all over him.

“You may be correct about Cruz not really connecting with the average voter, and I wish I could explain it. I understand him sufficiently.”

He lacks the gift of schmooze. He presents like a litigator at an adversarial hearing. He is not in court, he is courting the public. He should relax and convey that he is speaking with people he considers peers, whatever he actually feels or however far behind the curve they may be.

His problem connecting is a problem with style, not substance. There is no use complaining that style is beside the point. Every election is to some extent a popularity contest, and style is a factor in that.

I’m not saying this to knock him. I like him and hope he can become stronger, because he certainly could be a key player in a deadly struggle that will go on for decades, should he so choose.

Trump’s speech yesterday was really, really weird.

Agreed, but then again, the Donald likes to throw bombs. It was a dumb move politically for a front-runner and it was entirely unnecessary, but Trump can’t seem to help himself when he is not the center of attention (even when the attention is negative to a rival).

Alienate enough people and you lose a national election because the margin for error is very small for the GOP. What good will it do for us to nominate a person with very high negatives to face a rat with high negatives?

I like much of what Trump proposes, but I also don’t appreciate the narcissistic personality disorder that comes with it. He frequently has these moments that make you feel like you are driving around with a grenade with a loose pin rolling around on the floorboard. Maybe it’s just me, but he makes me cringe as often as he makes me cheer.

I know some like to point out that there is no such thing as bad publicity, but that crap yesterday played right into the stereotype of Trump that is emerging. Hillary is very beatable unless we nominate a candidate with high negatives and similar personality issues.

Trump needs to get it together and run a campaign based on his ideas not his bombastic personality.
