The call Jeannene Anderson always dreaded came on a day in March.
A New Orleans homicide detective across the line barely finished the words "death investigation," when Anderson fell to the floor thinking of her daughter's peregrine life.
Julia, who for years had lived as a transient, would not be coming home. New Orleans police found her in a McDonald's parking lot the evening of March 19, clutching her neck from a stab wound authorities say was inflicted by another transient, 38-year-old Christopher Hutsell. She was rushed to surgery but died several hours later.
"People in this situation, where you've got somebody in this lifestyle for so many years, you think you're prepared for this call," Anderson said of her daughter's vagabond lifestyle a few weeks after her death. "It goes through your mind thousands of times. But the actual feeling is so different, to know that your child is dead."
Perhaps it was the romantic allure of "freedom" that led a teenage Julia Anderson to pursue life as a modern-day nomad. But after five or so years of hopping freight trains and squatting in abandoned homes across the United States, the 23-year-old known by her road name, "Zoe," arrived in New Orleans in February 2015 with her eyes set, again, on a more settled life.
She never got the chance. Hutsell, who last week was ruled competent to stand trial, is set to face a jury Tuesday (Nov. 10) in Orleans Parish Criminal Court. He has pleaded not guilty to killing Julia.
"You thought she was getting her life together," Anderson said. "It might have been a long road before she got her life together, but she never had that opportunity. Her life was taken ... I won't ever be the same."

Hitler was someone’s son. Don’t judge him.
See how silly that sounds when taken to the extreme?
None of my bad choices have ever been to steal my mothers wallet and live on the streets for years.
Neither have most peoples.
Relativists like you are really just enablers.
Well, you obviously lack the capacity to explain to me where I might be wrong...suggesting to me that you are ill-equipped to tell me that I do not know what I am talking about.
LOL. Thanks for playing. U win by pulling Hitler!
Must be nice to be perfect....since u never stole your Mother’s wallet and all. Life must be grand for u and yours. Yay!
Her bad choices were to treat her parents like garbage, and to waste all the opportunities and luxuries she was given by loving parents and a generous God.
Many, many people grew up with much less and became kind, considerate and helpful people.
She was selfish, cruel and destructive instead.
Evil people like her are the cause of most of the suffering in this world.
She hated and mistreated the people who loved her unsparingly.
Did you read any of the comments at the end of the article? Most of the commenters could not give a rats ass about this girl.
Oh...so u knew her personally? U knew her well enough to sign off on her as a “bad person”? Wow. Cool. U must know some high-up peeps.
We are all sinners - but that doesn't mean we should pretend that vicious behavior, our own or anyone else's, is acceptable behavior
thank heavens u only pretend to be in charge. U will miss a lot of "good" people.
I'm an adult who has lived his whole life in the big city.
I have known many drunken bums - unfortunately some personally.
I know her just as well as you do, and unlike you, I can consider her case rationally.
Let's say you knew her personally, and your dogged and irrational defense of her were based on specific knowledge instead of blind, self-righteous Pollyannaism.
Why was she right to treat her parents like garbage? Why was her behavior good, and worthy of imitation? What are the secret justifications for living as a drunken parasite?
Enlighten us as to why we should admire this user.
Goodnight.
What is the purpose of this article?
I have plenty of empathy, just not for a spoiled princess who chose poorly...
Bullshit
There is a generation between those two groups and NOLA cops were hard on longhairs
I lived it as a kid
What a teenaged response
I don’t have any yazidhis living in my house either but I have empathy for them
Ditto holocaust victims
But I do have white victims of black violence in my family...does that count yer majesty?
What I have always found pissy about this joint is how tuff talk jerks here are about the misfortune of others regardless
It smells to me the notions of young turds who haven’t lived much or bitter old lonely farts whose life passed them by
You think I’m soft come see me
Unlike you I’m a public freeper
The first time I went to New Orleans there were hippies all over the French Quarter. Gradually The hippies started to fade out and the hipsters took over.
Busted
down on Bourbon street
Setup
like a bowling pin
Knocked down, it get's to wearin' thin.
They just won't let you be, oh no.
Moving around most of my life and then going in the service I can say there is no place like Southeastern Louisiana. I've adopted well to this culture.
theres not enough difference between government aid and the millions of low end no future jobs we’re creating. must be way more stories like this than i can bear to hear.
My kid is far from perfect.
My wife and I are giving my daughter a base to build a wonderful future. What she does with that base is completely up to her. If she takes the path of the girl in the article we would choose not to waste our life savings hoping that she would come to her senses. Once she is an adult she will be completey responsible for her own path.
She was a sad excuse for an adult.
She was someone's daughter...making bad choices...as we ALL have
Oh yawn. How liberal of you. So from your POV the bad choice of taking underwater basket weaving is the same as the bad choice of being a bum?
It is cute the way you try to make excuses for this woman and her parents who enabled her bad choices but sorry, no.
I think you’re confusing bums and rainbow tribe with hippies
I grew up 120 miles north and it was our city from when the Sugar bowl was metal and great
The Warehouse was open
Jax made beer
Cops in the Quarter were all white and Huey Long was two lane and scary
No interstate and the airport was still mostly Lakefront because MSY was brand new
And Commanders Palace had an ice cream parlor next to it and the cemetery was patina but weeded and clean
The big wooden roller coaster was still operating at Ponchatrain
Fat City....boring ... was still some kind of hope to clean up the quarter
I remember exactly when the Dead got busted considering I followed them
Real hippies are today mid 60s and up
Hipsters generally under 35
New Orleans is hipsters no question especially the inked ones and the lesbian ones
We still go at least annually usually twice and in fact are debating Thanksgiving there in a weekly rental
There or Sanibel Naples
New Orleans is now totally black run and it shows
It is much much more dangerous and just less well run.
Pity
It’s our most unique city
My earliest memory is breakfast at Woolworths or Walgreens on Canal in the upstairs fountain area in around 62/63
All the outside intervention in the world wasn't going to help unless she wanted to take ownership of her problem and do the right thing instead of simply following her own lusts and delusions. She chose the latter too long and paid for it with her life.
