Half a century ago, student activists liberated themselvesâpartly, at leastâfrom in loco parentis: the paternalistic notion that college administrators should serve as watchful guardians, restricting studentsâ activities and rights in order to provide a safe environment for them, the way a mother or father would. Today, students across the country are determined to undo this liberation.
At Yale University, a group of aggrieved minority students have demanded the resignations of administrators who wisely rejected calls for emotional coddling. Nicholas Christakis, the master of Yaleâs Silliman College, and his wife, Erika Christakis, an early childhood educator at Yale, conveyed to students that they should make their own decision about what Halloween costumes to wear, avert their eyes if they are offended, and make their own decisions about appropriate dress. Nicholas was subsequently mobbed by students, forced to apologize, andâif students get their wayâcould lose his job as master of Silliman.
Perhaps the most astonishing thing about these studentsâ censorious actions is how profoundly conservative they are. By communicating an expectation that their master or president protect them from unsightly Halloween costumes, or promise them no more hurtful words will be said at their expense, students are essentially calling for a return to campus life under in loco parentis. They reject not merely a free and open campus dialogue, but adulthood itself.
A controversial column in The Yale Daily Herald makes this rejection undeniable:

What if the housemasters and administration acted like good Orthodox Christian parents and said, “We don’t celebrate Halloween”?
And what if the parents of these students said, “We sent you to college to learn about the wider world beyond our home. You’re going to see things you don’t like, and even things that God doesn’t like either. You don’t need to go along with any of these things. And if you are exposed to temptation, you can take refuge in prayer, and in the Sacraments of Confession and Communion. Then you may—with God’s help—grow in grace as well as growing intellectually and professionally.”
Being attacked on all sides by “gays”, muslims, banksters, and feminazis, we don’t need the commies to come back out of the past to harass us, too!!!!
Hubby was stationed in a third world country, I went along for the ride, and it took me maybe..1 hour after we landed to appreciate the US of A and all that we have here. All of these little cry babies need to live in a third world country for 1 year, that would definitely take the starch out of them and they would have a whole new meaning and appreciation for the United States of America. We Americans take too much for granted.
wtf
That did a while lot of good, didn’t it?
Another gem from the ‘60s.
That could be a self cancelling problem before long-they are not as numerous as most age groups of taxpayers, and most of us are sick of supporting their lazy asses-when their enablers are voted out, they are out of blankies and pacifiers-and it is sink or swim time-I’ll bet real money that most of them end up going to still-liberal run states like California-they could also go to Canada and try to survive in the Yukon...
The self sufficient oriented, anti-authoritian, independent, personal liberty loving hippies of the time could handle it. Today’s Snowflake generation, not so much apparently.
The world is full of educated idiots.
They raised The Participation Trophy Generation. God save us all.
We should ban automatic transmissions.
75% of women would not be able to drive...
—> safer highways.....
Anyone see the Missouri “manifesto”. The idiots cannot complete a sentence.
At the very least, it would make it necessary to be somewhat coordinated, and concentrate on driving.
When I was in drivers’ ed, parents could choose for their kid to learn to drive either a stick or an automatic shift-mine chose the stick. By the time my cub learned to drive, the program no longer taught kids to drive a stick shift-only the automatic-so my husband and I taught her to drive the family 4x4-a stick. I live in BFE-kids drive trucks and SUV’s with a stick out here as often as an automatic...
Sooner or later, they will be confronted with the real world of work and responsibility, and I don’t think many will have any success-just look at the ones with a college education who can barely handle a 20 hr. per week job flipping burgers-they don’t even have basic customer service skills, never mind the ability to deal with customers/clients in any more complicated way.
Not true out here-most people of both genders are comfortable driving truck or SUV with a stick.
They are going to die.
Miserably.
Look on the bright side. I don't think any of us are going to be sharing any foxholes with these wussies. They'll be long gone.
By design they will not be confronted by the real world. They will and are being pushed aside for third worlders. Examine where this leaves our country just a couple decades from now, both domestically and abroad.
