A 9-year-old girl died Sunday after a pit bull attacked her while she played with friends in a Long Island backyard, authorities said.

Nassau County police officers responded to a 911 call at a Holland Avenue house in Elmont at around 10:30 a.m. and found the dog attacking the girl. When one of the officers entered the yard from the house, the dog charged at the officer, who shot and killed the animal, said Detective Michael Bitsko. "It was a violent attack," he said. "They had to put the dog down."

The girl's identity hasn't been disclosed by police. There had been no previous complaints to police about the dog, Bitsko said, adding that he didn't know why the dog attacked the girl.

The dog's owner, Carlyle Arnold, 29, lives in a second-floor apartment of the house. He was arrested on an unrelated charge of violating an order of protection and was being questioned about the attack.

I’m more inclined to trust a pit bull than someone from the government, myself.

I do that too- My tagline was stolen from Admiral Lyons. He seems to be a great patriot-

A lab took a bite out of my wife’s leg while we were walking down the street outside the fence where the dog was. For some reason, a girl opened a gate, he darted out. thrust his nose against my wife;s pant’s leg. Never made a sound nor opened his jaws so far as I could tell. Then ran back through the gate. My wife said “he bit me!” I did not believe her until she touched her ants leg and came up with blood on her hand. I look and saw a v-shaped tear in his pants leg and flood coming out. Finally got the girl to bring out rg to use to press the womb. The took my wife to the hospital to get her wound treated. The hospital reported the incident to the German authorities, but we chose not to make a charge. But the owner was really sweating it, because the Germans were serious about animal bites. He would have been put down. The owner not only agree to pay the medical build but to biy my wife a new pair of pants and brought a very large bottle of very good wine. All dogs bite. My wife guessed he smelled our dogs sent on her, even though we did not have the dog with us. All dogs bite. Even our cocker, but her jaws were too weak to break the skin on your hand.

No offense but there is no such thing as being completely sure that your dog would never hurt anyone. That’s not to say that your dog isn’t a wonderful, gentle creature but even the best of dogs can and have had incidence that are out of character, for whatever reason (not feeling well, getting old, too rough in play or perceiving wrongly)Chances are your dog will never hurt anything or anyone (and especially not you) but I have seen it happen with a very calm and loving Retriever/lab mix when they perceived play with their pack child as a threat. Nothing major, just a pinch/bruise before the owner came out and called the dog away. I’m not blaming the dog, I get along with him great now:) I just make sure he’s put in his house before I run around and play with my nephew.

That said, a Pitt bull is on a whole other level. When THEY get upset and attack, they aim to kill not just wound.

All types of dogs bite, only a handful of breeds kill with any sort of regularity and Pit Bulls kill more than all other breeds combined.

How true you are. Years ago we had black lab-setter mixed dog. one of the finest of bird dogs and kindest and playful with all people. However, one day a young girl who was not from our neighborhood came up to the dog to pet it. The young girl about 12 years of age knelt down and attempted to just give the dog a warm muzzy. Our friendly dog nipped her nose such that it had a little blood from the bite. Lucky for us that in those days people understood such incidents could happen and never sued us.

I live WAY out in the country in rural Tennessee and ride a six mile route on my bicycle. I get chased by several dogs but the only one that really concerns me is a large female Pitbull. The owners are young and never let her loose in the yard if they aren’t with her. If she sees me she will charge but never makes it past the property line because they call her back. I have seen her playing with neighborhood kids and she seems friendly but when I’m on the bike they are all dangerous.

Anyway, one day I stopped and asked them if she would bite if she caught me and they said “no, she’s very sweet but she’s always in the house if we aren’t outside”. They have about four ‘Beware of the Dog’ signs nailed to trees in the yard. Still, I carry pepper spray and my .38 strapped to the handlebar of the bike when I ride.

More importantly, smart people don’t have dogs with such facility and proclivity for violence.

Most people do not want to be sued because of their dog’s actions. Then again, when one’s only asset is a vial of crack, an EBT Card, and gallons of anhydrous ammonia, why worry about such frivolous things?
